Claes Johnson on Mathematics and Science: Making of the Prandtl ...

We cite from the book Fundamentals of?Aerodynamics by John D Anderson addressed in a?previous post,?concerning Ludwig?Prandtl, the father of modern aerodynamics:

The first practical theory for predicting the aerodynamic properties of a finite wing was developed by Ludwig Prandtl and his colleagues at Gottingen, Germany, during the period 1911-1918, spanning World War I. The utility of Prandtl's theory is so great that it is still in use today for preliminary calculations of finite-wing characteristics.
The modern science of aerodynamics rests on a strong fundamental foundation, a large percentage of which was established in one place by one man-at the University of Gottingen by Ludwig Prandtl. Prandtl never received a Noble Prize, although his contributions to?aerodynamics and fluid mechanics are felt by many to be of that caliber.
By the 1930s, Prandtl was recognized worldwide as the "elder statesman" of fluid dynamics. Although he continued to do research in various areas, including structural mechanics and meteorology, his "Nobel Prize-level" contributions to fluid dynamics had all been made.?
Prandtl remained at Gottingen throughout the turmoil of World War II, engrossed in his work and seemingly insulated from the intense political and physical disruptions brought about by?Nazi Germany.?
In fact, the German Air Ministry provided Prandtl's laboratory with new equipment and financial?support.?
Prandtl was considered a tedious lecturer because he could hardly make a statement without qualifying it. However, he attracted excellent students...?
Prandtl died in 1953. He was clearly the father of modern aerodynamics-a monumental figure in fluid dynamics. His impact will be felt for centuries to come.

Anderson captures the essential quality of Prandtl's theory as a?practical method for preliminary calculation of wing characteristics (lift), ?and not a physical theory describing the true aerodynamics of the generation of lift of a wing. Anderson further emphasizes the strong connection between Prandtl's work and German war efforts, and thus gives the reason why Prandtl was not near to get a Nobel Prize.

Navy replaces admiral leading Mideast strike group

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. Navy said Saturday it is replacing the admiral in command of an aircraft carrier strike group in the Middle East, pending the outcome of an internal investigation into undisclosed allegations of inappropriate judgment.

Rear Adm. Charles M. Gaouette is being sent back to the USS John C. Stennis' home port at Bremerton, Washington stae, in what the Navy called a temporary reassignment. The Navy said he is not formally relieved of his command of the Stennis strike group but will be replaced by Rear Adm. Troy M. Shoemaker, who will assume command until the investigation is completed.

It is highly unusual for the Navy to replace a carrier strike group commander during its deployment.

The Navy did not reveal details of the allegations, citing only an accusation of "inappropriate leadership judgment" that arose during the strike group's deployment to the Middle East. Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Navy's chief spokesman, declined to discuss the investigation.

The Stennis group deployed from Bremerton in late August and had entered the Navy 5th Fleet's area of operations in the Middle East on Oct. 17 after sailing across the Pacific. The Stennis made port visits in Thailand and Malaysia on its way to the Middle East.

It deployed four months earlier than scheduled in response to a request by the commander of U.S. Central Command, Marine Gen. James Mattis, to maintain two aircraft carriers in the Middle East. The Stennis replaced the USS Enterprise carrier group.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta visited the Stennis and its sailors in Bremerton shortly before they departed. He thanked them for accelerating their deployment on short notice.

"I understand that it is tough," Panetta said. "We are asking an awful lot of each of you, but frankly you are the best I have and when the world calls we have to respond."

A NEW study suggests that obesity is irreversible if not caught early enough ? and that people who are fat in childhood may end up ?programmed? to be fat for life.

Experiments at the University of Michigan and the National Council of Science and Tecnology (CONICET) in Argentina showed that the longer mice remained overweight, the harder they found it to shift the pounds for good.

That?s because the animals reset their body weight set point to ?normal? when obese or overweight.

The boffins flipped a genetic switch that controls hunger using mice at several different ages.

Turning on the switch right after weaning prevented those mice from overeating and ever becoming obese.

Similarly, mice that remained at a healthy weight into young adulthood by strict dieting alone were able to maintain normal weight without dieting after turning on the switch.

But chronically overfed mice with the earliest onset of obesity never completely returned to normal weight after flipping the switch ? despite reducing their food intake and increasing activity.

Senior author Professor Malcolm J. Low said: ?Somewhere along the way, if obesity is allowed to continue, the body appears to flip a switch that reprogrammes to a heavier set weight.

?Our model demonstrates that obesity is in part a self-perpetuating disorder ? and highlights why most adults find it difficult to maintain meaningful weight loss from dieting and exercise alone.

Romney Shares Her $137.50 Costco List

When Ann Romney cooks for the Romney clan, she goes big.

"I always start at Costco," Romney said on the "Rachel Ray Show" today as the audience watched pre-taped video of her pushing an over-sized grocery cart at the bulk-goods store.

Zooming around the store that she' didn't name by location, Romney grabbed large bags of spinach, several containers of frozen cream puffs and pre-cooked rotisserie chicken.

"The great thing about frozen desserts, they're always ready to go," Romney gushed.

For roughly $4.50 per person - a $137.50 tab - Romney can feed all five sons and their families, a total of 30 people, she said.

Incidentally, Costco founder James Sinegal endorsed President Barack Obama earlier this year.

In addition to preparing a Gov. Mitt Romney favorite dish, meatloaf cakes, Ann Romney dished on a few secrets about her husband.

"Mitt is not a picky eater," she said. "He will eat anything you put in front of him."

Her husband also cuts to the front of the line during their family's buffet-style meals, she added.

Several members of the family Romney were in the audience, including the Romney's son Tagg.

The mother of five boys also revealed what she would have named a daughter: Patience Darling Romney, after a great-great-grandmother.

Romney, 63, also talked at length about how she coped with raising a family while suffering from multiple sclerosis, a neurological disease that can cause weakness, numbness and vision loss. She's also a breast-cancer survivor.

She noted that Costco rotisserie chicken was a staple in the Romney household during her illness.

"When I was first diagnosed with MS and my husband was taking care of me, he discovered rotisserie chicken," Romney said.

Her husband told her then, "I don't care if we eat cereal and toast the rest of my life, as long as we're together," she said.

On the campaign trail, Romney says, she eats healthy (more healthy than her husband), exercises, and takes time off to recover from the stress and the grueling schedule.

"MS has been my greatest teacher, it's been the toughest teacher and breast cancer as well," Romney said. "But you have to know that the sun always will come up, that there will be a better day."

Fighting erupts near Damascus ahead of truce deadline

AMMAN (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad's forces fired heavy tank and rocket barrages at a Damascus suburb on Thursday, killing five people, opposition activists said, a day before a UN-brokered ceasefire is due to come into force.

The fighting in Harasta, just northeast of Damascus, erupted after rebels overran two army roadblocks on the edge of the large town, which is on the main highway linking the capital to the country's north, they said.

"Harasta is being pummeled by tanks and rocket launchers deployed in the highway. The rebels are putting up a fight and it does not seem the army will be able to enter the town this time," Mohammad, a Damascus resident, said by phone.

He was referring to the last armored incursion by loyalist forces into Harasta a month ago, which opposition campaigners said had killed 70 people.

Harasta is one of a series of large Sunni Muslim suburbs ringing the Syrian capital that have been at the forefront of the 19-month-old rebellion against Assad.

He belongs to the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam that has dominated Syrian politics since the 1960s.

The Harasta Media Office opposition activists' group described the town as a "disaster zone" following the shelling.

"An (army) roadblock had been set up next to the main bakery. There is no water, no food, no medicine and prolonged power cuts," it said in a statement.

Other residents of Damascus said the sound of shelling targeting Harasta and the nearby neighborhood of Zamalka could be heard from the centre of the capital.

On Wednesday, an Arab League mediator for the Syrian conflict told the U.N. Security Council that Assad has accepted a ceasefire for the Muslim 'Eid' holiday starting on Friday.

An announcement by the Syrian authorities was expected later. But Moaz al-Shami, an opposition activist in Damascus said "no one is taking the ceasefire seriously".

"How can there be a ceasefire with tanks roaming the streets, roadblocks every few hundred meters and the army having no qualms about hitting civilian neighborhoods with heavy artillery? This is a regime that has lost all credibility."

Tyrannosaurs tore the heads off armored prey to reach their tender neck meat

Raleigh, North Carolina?Theirs was the immortal battle: a fierce tyrant battling a defender armed with three lethal horns and protected by a bony frill around its neck. Yet the violent fight between Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops is hardly the stuff of Hollywood hype. Tyrannosaurus bite marks are well known on the fossil bones of Triceratops but, so far, such fossils have always been studied in an isolated manner.

In a departure from this precedent, work presented last week at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology?s annual meeting in Raleigh, North Carolina, reports on an examination of numerous bite-scarred Triceratops bones and a theory of how Tyrannosaurus fed.

Denver Fowler at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana, and his colleagues studied numerous Triceratops specimens from Montana's Hell Creek Formation to identify how many had the characteristic tooth marks of Tyrannosaurus on them. They found 18, most of which were skulls. When they looked closer, they noted something important: none of the bones showed any signs of healing, indicating that the bites were inflicted on dead animals that were in the process of being eaten.

As Fowler and his colleagues examined the various types of bite mark on the skulls, they were intrigued by the extensive puncture and pull marks on the neck frills on some of the specimens. At first, this seemed to make no sense. ?The frill would have been mostly bone and keratin,? says Fowler. ?Not much to eat there.? The pulling action and the presence of deep parallel grooves led the team to realize that these marks were probably not indicative of actual eating, but repositioning of the prey. The scientists suggest that the frills were in the way of Tyrannosaurus as it was trying to get at the nutrient-rich neck muscles.

?It's gruesome, but the easiest way to do this was to pull the head off,? explains Fowler with a grin. The researchers found further evidence to support this idea when they examined the Triceratops occipital condyles ? the ball-socket head?neck joint ? and found tooth marks there too. Such marks could only have been made if the animal had been decapitated.

Bites and nibbles
?Innovative and thorough, this work really shows the value of incomplete specimens and large samples for interpreting paleobiology,? says paleontologist Andrew Farke at the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology in Claremont, California.

It also shows that Tyrannosaurus also had a daintier side. Fowler and his team found precise, even delicate, bites along the front of several Triceratops skulls, and suggest that these are nibbles on the tender meat found on the face.

The discoveries led Fowler and his colleagues to question whether the feeding behavior of Tyrannosaurus changed substantially as the animals grew. The team proposes that, with their particularly thick teeth, adult tyrannosaurids would have been well-suited to tearing apart something as tough as a Triceratops, whereas younger individuals may have had to rely on different feeding strategies to prevent them from damaging their teeth.

There is also the question of how the creatures might have evolved over time. ?It is going to be interesting to see if similar patterns of prey processing occurred earlier in time,? says Farke. ?I really wonder what the smaller tyrannosaurs that lived millions of years before T. rex were doing.?
