In Southern states, immigration law battle rages on | 89.3 KPCC

Last year, several states passed strict laws aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration. Those laws are now being challenged in federal court, and next month the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on Arizona's immigration law ? but that hasn't stopped some Southern states from moving forward with more restrictions.

In 2011, Georgia passed a sweeping anti-immigration measure that requires law enforcement officers to check the status of people they suspect are in the country illegally and forces employers to verify the immigration status of workers. Now, lawmakers have been debating a bill to ban students here illegally from attending all public colleges ? and that has drawn criticism.

Democratic state Sen. Nan Orrock addressed the bill at a recent rally held at the Georgia Capitol.

Before a vote last night, a House committee took out the provision that would have banned illegal immigrants from colleges. D.A. King helped write the Georgia immigration law, and he says the intent of the bill is to update the identification requirements for people to prove they are here legally.

"But also to stop the acceptance of undocumented passports or passports issued to people in the country illegally after they arrive in the United States," King says. "That will do a lot to keep illegal aliens uncomfortable in the state of Georgia which has been our goal since we started."

Some suggest the move to forbid immigrants from using foreign passports to prove their identity will affect thousands of legal immigrants and foreign tourists. The ACLU's Jonathon Blazer says the regulation makes it difficult for this group to use basic services.

"It includes access to municipal buildings, marriage licenses, water [and] sewage services," Blazer says. "And these are the kind of unintended ? if they are unintended ? consequences that arise when states try to dabble in this area."

Alabama is moving forward with efforts to clarify its immigration law, which is in the courts, and the Mississippi House recently passed a bill calling for police to check the immigration status of those who are arrested. During a fiery debate over the bill, Mississippi state Rep. Andy Gipson, a Republican, said the measure is not unjust.

"Any person in Mississippi who breaks our laws and is arrested for doing so can be asked to present proof that they're here legally," Gipson said. "I don't think that's asking too much."

But state Rep. Ed Blackmon, a Democrat, is among those who oppose the bill.

"There's no compassion in this," he responded. "There's no forgiveness in this. We are going to bring down the hammer on a group of people who only want to do one thing: Find a better life for themselves."

Meanwhile, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant has continued to support immigration laws, saying the states are justified in passing them.

"I think we took some of the most offensive language out ... so I think we have a really good, fair law," he says.

This year, Southeastern states have provided much of the debate on the immigration issue. Some, like Georgia and Alabama, are revamping laws. But bills in Tennessee, Arkansas and Virginia are on hold at least until this summer, when the Supreme Court is expected to rule on Arizona's law.

Many successful cancer drugs are kinase inhibitors, which block the ability of a kinase to bind with a particular protein on the cell, stopping phosphorylation and the creation of cancer cells.

Andy Tao, a Purdue associate professor of biochemistry and member of the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research, said that in later stages of cancers, kinase-inhibiting drugs are ineffective because the kinases adapt, finding new protein targets and forming new cancer cells. He believes that creating maps of all the potential routes for cancer cell formation is a key to developing better cancer drugs.

"I would say that 99 percent of these drugs are effective for a few months in late-state cancers, and then the cancers develop resistance," said Tao, whose findings were published online early in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "In the beginning, the cell cannot adjust and it dies. In later stages, the cells find a way. Cancer cells find a way to survive. You block one pathway, and they find another."

The kinase-protein maps Tao is creating identify kinases and the direct protein targets they phosphorylate. His method weeds out other proteins that are not direct targets, but are later phosphorylated as part of a cascade of reactions that begins when direct target proteins are phosphorylated.

Tao compared cells with and without kinases. The phosphoproteins present only when a kinase was present were considered possible targets. Further, the proteins were dephosphorylated, meaning the phosphate groups that had been added by kinases were removed.

The kinase was then re-introduced, and those proteins that accepted phosphate groups from the kinase were deemed direct targets of that kinase. With that information, drugmakers could tailor kinase-inhibiting drugs to ensure that the drug would stop kinases from reaching all potential targets, making the drugs more effective.

"If you understand the network, you can block all the pathways to cure the cancer," Tao said.

Tao's research findings focused on the SYK kinase, which is involved in leukemia and breast cancers. He plans to study other kinases, as well as mutated kinases, to understand whether they have different protein targets.

Tao collaborated with Robert Geahlen, a professor in medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology at Purdue. The National Institutes of Health funded the research.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Ruthie Pliskin didn't want Israel's threats of a possible military strike to be the only message her country had for Iran. So the doctoral student from Tel Aviv posted a photo of herself and her cat on Facebook, with a sign in Farsi reading: "We love you, people of Iran."

She says she received enthusiastic responses from Iranians when she posted on an "Israel-Loves-Iran" Facebook page who corrected the sign's spelling and returned warm wishes.

Pliskin is among a small but growing number of Israelis trying to reach out to Iranians, even as Israeli politicians warn with growing frequency and intensity that Israel might strike to halt Tehran's suspected nuclear weapons program.

Israelis mounted an art exhibit in Tel Aviv centered on Iran, built a website in Farsi with news of Israeli daily life, and protested Saturday against a potential strike on Iranian nuclear installations. They have also posted images endlessly shared on Facebook against a war with Iran.

Meir Javedanfar, an Israeli expert on Iran, said that this marks the first time Israelis have reached out in such a way to another nation in the Middle East. Has it had impact in Iran so far? That's not clear yet, though Israelis say Iranians are responding positively to the Internet outreach. But it appears unlikely that any good will being generated by civilians will sway governments.

Israel's leaders say a nuclear-armed Iran is an existential threat. Iranian leaders often demonize Israel. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has said he's willing to give sanctions and negotiations a few more months to deter Iran from trying to obtain nuclear weapons, but suggests that, if efforts fail, Israel could strike this year. Iran insists it is pursuing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, but warns it will strike back if attacked.

In Israel, surveys show that a majority oppose a solo Israeli attack on Iran without American military cooperation.

Retired Israeli military and intelligence leaders have advised against striking Iran, arguing that Israel doesn't have enough bomb shelters or gas masks to absorb a possible Iranian counterattack.

"Despite all this, our prime minister wants to take us to war," said Tzvika Besor, a Tel Aviv marketing agent who organized Saturday's protest. "And we say no."

A few hundred Israelis rallied in Tel Aviv Saturday night, holding signs reading "No to war," and, addressing prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, "Bibi, don't bomb Iran,"

And another prominent Israeli added his voice in opposition on Saturday. Former Defense Minister Amir Peretz said Israel shouldn't be the one taking on the entire Arab and Muslim world when it was clear Israel would be blamed the day after.

Other protests have taken a more artistic approach. In early March, three Tel Aviv artists mounted an exhibition called "Iran," featuring a fake missile pointed at the nearby U.S. Embassy, a statue of Barak titled "the most dangerous man in the world 2012" and short films. Hundreds attended its opening night.

At Haifa University, the head of the Ezri Center for Iran and Persian Gulf Studies started a Persian-language news portal from Israel, called TeHTel, to show a Tehran-Tel Aviv bond.

Launched March 4, the site drew 22,000 visitors in its first two weeks, including several thousand directly from Iran. TeHTel offers personal essays from Israelis, musings on hamburgers and holidays, and translated news from Hebrew news sites and blogs on the country's social and economic reality. An anonymous donor underwrote the project, and paid staff to maintain it, including Iranian-Israeli translators.

"There's interest, people are reading it, there are talkbacks, people write and reply to each other," said Soli Shahvar, the site's creator. "We want to come and stop this twisting of reality that (the Iranian) government does to Israel as a people that wants to rule the world, as Zionists who are killing Palestinians."

The hunger to connect has reached the government as well. Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said that the office staff will learn about Iran next week, with a slide show, tastes of Persian food and lectures on Iranian religion and culture.

Palmor said it will be a day off from politics, and more like other enrichment lectures on American literature and French wine.

Despite the current animosity, Iran is "still an important country in the region with which we have had good relations in the past and with which we aspire to have good relations in the future," Palmor said.

Prior to its 1979 Islamic revolution ? when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini severed all diplomatic and commercial ties with Israel and began referring to its government as the "Zionist regime" ? Iran was an ally of Israel with the Shah maintaining warm relations with Israeli leaders.

This is not the first time the Internet has bridged a gap between hostile countries in the region. Israelis and Lebanese commented on each other's blogs throughout the Israel-Lebanon war in 2006. A Gazan from a refugee camp and an Israeli from a border town co-hosted a blog during Israel's military offensive in Gaza in 2008.

But Iran is different.

Javedanfar, an Iranian-Israeli, said this movement may be fueled in part by a large successful community of Israelis with Iranian roots that is "out and proud with its Persian identity."

Some 250,000 Israelis, out of a population of 7.8 million, are of Iranian descent. They include former army chief Shaul Mofaz and singer Rita, who has put out a Farsi album.

The success of the Oscar-winning film "A Separation" has helped humanize Iranians, in contrast to "the petrifying picture of Iran which Iranian politicians have managed to produce," Javedanfar said.

Pliskin, 29, is among the Israelis who wanted to reach out with anti-war posters for Iran. The Israel-Loves-Iran page garnered 34,000 "likes" within a week.

One shows a couple kissing. The young man holds up his Israeli passport, right beside his purported girlfriend's Iranian passport. "I love my Persian girlfriend," the caption reads.

"Persian cats, we will never bomb your country!" reads one Israeli poster showing a cute cat.

Other posters claimed to show Iranian affection for Israel, but their origins could not be pinned down. One said, "Israelian friends, I wish we both get rid of our idiot politicians anyway, nice to see you!"

Pliskin called the connection with the targeted country "exciting."

"I was moved by everything that's going on," she said, "and that I was able to be a part of it so easily."

Space junk threatens station astronauts

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A discarded chunk of a Russian rocket is forcing six space station astronauts to seek shelter in escape capsules early Saturday.

NASA spokesman Rob Navias (NAVE-e-us) says the space junk will barely be close enough to be a threat. But if it hits the station it could be dangerous, so the astronauts ? two Americans, three Russians and a Dutchman ? will wake early and climb into two Soyuz vehicles ready to rocket back to Earth just in case.

The debris is supposed to come closest at 2:38 a.m. EDT. It was not noticed until Friday, too late to move the International Space Station out of the way.

This is the third time in 12 years that astronauts have had to seek shelter from space junk.

Courtney Robertson and Ben Flajnik: Staying Strong, Moving in Together Soon!

The Bachelor stars Ben Flajnik and Courtney Robertson are determined to make this thing work in spite of all the negativity - and they appear to be succeeding.

At least in the immediate aftermath of The Bachelor bloodbath.

Once host-pimp Chris Harrison coughed up and Ben re-issued the $80,000 Neil Lane ring to Courtney on the After The Final Rose special, they turned a corner.

Courtney says that despite the bumps in the road over the last few months, things are progressing nicely and she's nothing but optimistic for the future.

"We try not to pay attention to it," Courtney said this week of the tabloid scrutiny. "I guess positive stories don’t sell, so no one wants to run the truth."

However, it hasn't been all nude photo scandals, cheating rumors and hating. The general public, Court says, has been quite supportive in recent weeks:

“I just spent the weekend with Ben in San Francisco and people kept coming up, offering words of encouragement. So, things seem to be getting better.”

Courtney Robertson reiterated that she believes Ben did not cheat, saying "at the end of the day, if I didn’t trust him, I wouldn’t be with him, period."

“He trusted and believed in the real me. This has been the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I found Ben; he made everything worth it.”

On the topic of moving in together, she says, “I’m hopeful it will happen by summer. We’re not in a rush, but neither of us wants to be in a long distance relationship."

"For now, we have a lot of fun, little trips planned. But I do love San Francisco and can definitely see myself having a happy life there with Ben.”

As for Ben's sister Julia, who Tweeted the pic above of their recent double date, she says they "talk all the time and she’s really helped me get through this."

Can our genes be making us fat?

ScienceDaily (Mar. 22, 2012) ? While high-fat foods are thought to be of universal appeal, there is actually a lot of variation in the extent to which people like and consume fat. A new study in the March issue of the Journal of Food Science, published by the Institute of Food Technologists, reported that two specific genes (TAS2R38-a bitter taste receptor and CD36-a possible fat receptor), may play a role in some people's ability to taste and enjoy dietary fat. By understanding the role of these two genes, food scientists may be able to help people who have trouble controlling how much fat they eat.

Most food scientists acknowledge the texture of fat plays a big role in how fat is perceived in the mouth. For example, ice cream is typically "rich, smooth and creamy." And certain fats, scientists have determined, can be detected by smell. Only recently have food scientists explored that most fats have a taste too. Researchers are now investigating the gene (CD360) that is responsible for detecting the taste of fats (fatty acids) in the mouth.

In the recent Journal of Food Science study, investigators focused on one ethnic group to limit genetic variation that could reduce the ability to detect associations with the gene of interest. They determined the fat preferences and CD36 status of more than 300 African-American adults. The investigators from the New York Obesity Research Center identified a genetic variant present in 21 percent of the African-Americans that was associated with higher preferences for added fats and oils (e.g. salad dressings, cooking oils, etc). They also found study participants with this genetic variance ranked Italian salad dressings creamier than those who have other genotypes.

The other gene explored by these investigators, TAS2R38, is the receptor for bitter taste compounds. About 70 percent of U.S. adults and children are "tasters" of these compounds, while the remaining 30 percent are "nontasters." Results indicate that nontasters of these compounds tend to be poor at discriminating fat in foods; therefore individuals who can't detect fat's presence may consume higher fat foods to compensate. This is in part due to the fact that nontasters have fewer taste buds than tasters. While researchers recognize that the cause of obesity is multifaceted, they continue to examine the role of these genotypes in weight management.

Genetic testing within the food industry may not be too far off. Once studies like these are more fully developed, there may be a role for genotyping study participants when it comes to testing a new product. For example, a company wanting to test out a dressing may include people with different genes relating to fat perception in order to get a more accurate opinion. In addition, the food industry will be able to create different kinds of foods for certain populations.
