Video: Pop Pilgrims 2013: The golf club that hosted Caddyshack?s raucous production

The idea for Caddyshack came from a personal place: Co-writer Brian Doyle-Murray (and his brother Bill) had worked as caddies as teenagers, as had director and co-writer Harold Ramis. When the latter was fresh off the success of Animal House and looking to direct his first film, the studio wasn?t into the ideas he and co-writer/producer Douglas Kenney had?one a dark comedy set in the Third Reich and the other a ?Marxist revisionist Western.? But the coming-of-age story about caddies working at a tony country club stuck.

The model for Bushwood was Indian Hill Country Club in Winnetka, Illinois, which presented a problem when it came time to shoot: Principal photography would happen in the fall of 1979, and the Chicago area?s unpredictable weather during that time of year disqualified it for production. Ramis and company didn?t want to shoot in California and have the studio breathing down their necks, so they settled on Florida, about as far away from Hollywood as they could get. The reason they chose Grande Oaks Golf Club (then a public course called Rolling Hills) as their primary location is right in the name: oaks. Although located just outside Ft. Lauderdale, the place is littered with oak trees, not palm, so it could double as the Midwest.

Although the film used a couple other locations for some scenes?like the swimming pool, which is now gone, and the dance?everything else happened at Grande. The cast and crew stayed at the hotel adjacent to the property, and it became ground zero for the legendary partying that went on behind the scenes.?

?Doug Kenney, one of the producers that everyone loved, when he ran through the halls yelling, ?The eagle has landed!,? It pretty much meant, ?Get your per diem in cash and come on up,?? says Cindy Morgan, a.k.a. Lacey Underall, our guest for this episode. ?You would just roll home from the party, or get up, roll through wardrobe and makeup, and show up on the set. You never knew what was going to happen that day.?

Perhaps fittingly, not much looks the same at Grande Oaks as it did when Caddyshack shot there more than three decades ago. The hotel that hosted some of the most raucous partying in Hollywood history is now a dorm for Nova Southeastern University, which owns Grande Oaks. The clubhouse was leveled when the club was renovated in 2000, and the golf course has been redesigned. The titular caddyshack is long gone, save for some of its foundation.?

But Grande Oaks proudly touts its place in cinematic history: Its homepage proclaims it the ?Home of Caddyshack,? it named its snack bar after the film, and it naturally has a variety of Caddyshack merchandise in its pro shop. ?You hear a quote about every 20 minutes here,? says Joseph Semmler, the club?s membership director. He does it without even realizing he?s doing it. When we were chatting, a plane flew overhead?Grande Oaks lies in the flight path of Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which caused headaches for the production?so we had to pause and wait for it to pass. ?No big deal,? Semmler said.

?But see you say things like that, too,? he said a moment later. ?Like when I just said ?no big deal,? I say ?no big deal? because Bill Murray bit into the Baby Ruth and said, ?It?s no big deal.? I literally have these mannerisms where I say things like, ?It?s no big deal,? which was just in reference to the plane flying over, but it?s from the movie. That?s how much I?ve seen the movie, and that?s really even before working at this golf club. That?s how much the movie was a part of my life as a golfer.?

Grande Oaks gets guests from around the world who come just to play on the Caddyshack course.?

?There?s just something cult-like about Caddyshack,? Semmler says. ?It?s such a great?movie. I think Ms. Morgan said it best when she said, it was clear to see they?were having fun while shooting the movie. Everybody likes to be a part of that.?

Morgan has her own theory about why it has endured.??It was in every father?s library,? she says. ?One autograph I signed, it was kind of an odd, but good compliment, he said, ?Would you sign this photo to my father, my son, and myself?? In a Freudian manner, I don?t even know where to go with that.?

Lyon College named ?Best Southeastern College? by Princeton Review

(Lyon College) - For the 10th year in a row, The Princeton Review has named Lyon College a ?Best Southeastern College,? based on results from its ?2014 Best Colleges? survey.?

Lyon College is one of 138 schools receiving the Best in the Southeast designation compiled by the education services company headquartered in Massachusetts.?

?We're pleased to recommend Lyon College to users of our site as one of the best schools to earn their undergrad degree,? said Robert Franek, Princeton Review's senior vice president and publisher. ?We chose it and the other terrific institutions we name as 'regional best' colleges mainly for their excellent academic programs. From several hundred schools in each region, we winnowed our list based on institutional data we collected directly from the schools, our visits to schools over the years, and the opinions of our staff, plus college counselors and advisors whose recommendations we invite. We also take into account what students at the schools reported to us about their campus experiences at them on our 80-question student survey for this project. Only schools that permit us to independently survey their students are eligible to be considered for our regional 'best' lists.? ?

The 138 colleges The Princeton Review chose for its "Best in the Southeast" designations are located in 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. ?

The Princeton Review also designated 226 colleges in the Northeast, 124 in the West, and 155 in the Midwest as best in their locales on the company?s "2014 Best Colleges: Region by Region" lists.? Collectively, the 643 colleges named "regional best" constitute about 25 percent of the nation's 2,500 four-year colleges.

For this project, The Princeton Review asks students attending the schools to rate their own schools on several issues ? from the accessibility of their professors to quality of the campus food ? and answer questions about themselves, their fellow students, and their campus life. Comments from surveyed students are quoted in the school profiles on The Princeton Review site.??

One of the student comment sections of the website says:

?The workload here is challenging,? according to most students. ?Learning at Lyon is easy as long as you are willing to step forward and actively participate.? Does all the hard work and individual attention pay off? Students say it does: ?If you graduate from Lyon with a good GPA, chances are you have written enough good papers to be ahead of the curve in any grad school or profession.?

The Princeton Review is a known for its test prep courses, education services, and books. It has conducted the ?Best Colleges? survey since 1992, when it first published its annual guide, the only one offering college rankings based on student ratings of their schools and reports of their experiences at them. Headquartered in Framingham, MA, with editorial offices in New York, the Princeton Review, which is a privately held company, is not affiliated with Princeton University.

More miracles: tree in California weeping A) God?s tears? B) Divine love? C) Excrement?

It?s kind of funny how the meaning of words can change over time. ?Whenever I hear the word ?miracle? lately, I don?t think ?an act of god?. ?Instead I think ?oh, some more people are overlooking a simple explanation? or ?somebody?s declaring they have proof of magic after less than a second of investigation.? ?Or, at least, that?s what I thought when I heard of a tree in California that is weeping god?s tears.

Rosemarie Navarro, a parishioner at a Fresno, California Catholic Church says, ?I said my prayer and asked the Lord to give me a miracle cause I?m really, really sick.?

Navarro counts herself among the believers, a small but growing group that thinks the liquid dripping from this Crape Myrtle tree is the tears of God.

Parishioner Maria Ybarra says, ?When you say ?glory be to God in Jesus name? the tree starts throwing out more water.?

Water is dripping from a tree and you can think of no more likely explanation than god deciding the best way to help is not to cure your sickness, but to make water drip from a tree? ?Hell, why not just say the rain is god?s tears?

Like the rain, there?s a perfectly reasonable (and fitting) explanation for ?god?s tears?.

On close inspection, arborist Jon Reelhorn agrees, something is falling from the tree in front of St. Johns Cathedral. But it isn?t water.

?The aphides will suck the sap, the sap goes through the aphid and then it is a honey dew excrement from the aphid and it gets so heavy in the summertime that it will drip down,?? Reelhorn says.

He calls it a natural process. He also found another tree dripping across the street.

Yes Rosemarie, god?s tears are, in fact, aphid shit. ?They?re not as shit as standing in the face of something mundane and declaring it a miracle, but they?re still shit none the less. ?You asked for a miracle, that?s what god sent.

If you ask your doctors for a miracle, at least they?ll give you medicine. ?God couldn?t even be bothered to do that.

Division in the GOP: Republicans versus the Tea Party with Dana Loesch (Video)

Division in the GOP ? Republicans vs. Tea Party with Dana Loesch on The Huckabee Show.

Dana Loesch was on last night to discuss the current divide in the Republican Party over immigration and the upcoming budget debate.

Dana correctly pointed out that if the Republicans fold like a pup tent they?ll lose their base. The grassroots don?t trust the party. Republicans always end up giving up the most.
From the video: Can Differences within the Republican Party be settled in time to beat the Democrats in 2014 and 2016? Is a split within the GOP over the defunding of Obamacare worth shutting down the Government? FNC?s Mike Huckabee sits down to address these questions with a lively panel comprised of Sean Spicer (Communications Director, RNC), Dana Loesch (Radio Talk Show Host, Tea Party Activist) and Matt Welch (Editor in Chief, Reason Magazine), as they weigh in with their perspectives on how this might be accomplished before the next election.

In steady rain, Bolt reigns again in 100 at worlds

MOSCOW (AP) ? His legs were hurting, the rain was pouring and he was trailing late in the race.

Doesn't matter. This is Usain Bolt.

And nothing gets in the way of him and first place, especially when he's driven as he was Sunday night in the 100-meter final at the world championships.

Bolt blew by Justin Gatlin with about 30 meters to go and never glanced back. He also didn't even crack a smile when he crossed the finish line because this took a lot more work than the world's fastest sprinter usually needs.

Gatlin was second and Bolt's Jamaican teammate Nesta Carter took third.

Of all Bolt's titles, this one will have a special meaning, considering he false-started two years ago in the final to lose his crown.

Now, it's his again.

"It's always great to get back your title," said Bolt, who won in 9.77 seconds. "I'm happy with myself I got it done."

Like Bolt, Brittney Reese and Ashton Eaton were just as dominant. Reese won her third straight long jump gold, while Eaton now owns the world and Olympic decathlon titles.

Many of Bolt's top rivals were missing. Gone were Tyson Gay (doping offense) and Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake, who was the reigning champion but skipped the worlds because of an injured hamstring.

Shortly after the race, Bolt sauntered around the track with his country's flag tied around his neck like a cape. These days, he has to be the Superman of his sport. Given all the recent doping scandals, track needs someone to save the day.

For now, he will settle for blowing away the dark cloud over his country, a proud sprinting nation. Some of Jamaica's most decorated sprinters have taken a fall: Asafa Powell, Sherone Simpson and Veronica Campbell-Brown all tested positive for a banned substance and weren't at the worlds.

"I'm just doing my part by running fast, winning titles and letting the world know you can do it clean," Bolt said. "My focus is to continue doing what I do."

And that means running fast times, even on a drenched track.

What started as a steady drizzle turned into a downpour just before the gun sounded. So much so that Bolt clowned around when he was introduced to the crowd, pretending to open an umbrella.

Really, though, rain doesn't bother him. Not in the least.

Neither does anything else, like falling behind early. He knew he might trail Gatlin at the halfway mark. Bolt has never been a good starter and may have been extra cautious considering what happened in South Korea two years ago.

In the lane next to him, Gatlin got off to a great start and thought he might have enough in the tank to beat Bolt, just as he did two months ago in Rome.

"Then I saw these long legs coming up on my right side," Gatlin said. "He's great. He's just great."

These two aren't exactly the best of friends, but after the race, Gatlin congratulated Bolt, who had some kind words in return.

"For him to say to me, 'Hey, you're the guy who pushes me to go even faster.' I'm honored in that," Gatlin said. "But I thought I had it for a second."

Only this is Bolt, the best finisher around. He sniffed the finish line and turned on the turbo jets. He did have to labor hard, though, grimacing as he crossed the line. Some of that may have been due to his legs, which he said were sore.

Even at less than 100 percent, Bolt is still downright difficult to beat.

"I wanted to run faster, but after the semifinals my legs didn't feel up to it," Bolt said. "Don't know what happened. I'm going to get it worked on. Hopefully I won't have this problem in the 200 meters. Overall, it was a good race."

Mike Rodgers tried to get inside the head of Bolt after their semifinal matchup, staring up at the tall sprinter. Bolt got out to a big lead in that race earlier in the event and began loafing toward the finish line. Rodgers didn't particularly care for that.

"He thought he was going to slow down, like he could play with everybody," said Rodgers, who wound up sixth in the final. "I guess he knows he can't."

Perhaps.

Bolt still won convincingly ? once he got up to full stride, that is.

"I never look at things as easy. I put in hard work," Bolt said. "That's why I'm a champion. I keep pushing myself as a champion, no matter what. I push myself because that's what it takes."

In other finals, Olympic champion Sandra Perkovic of Croatia won the discus, Aleksandr Ivanov of Russia captured the men's 20-kilometer walk and Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia dominated the 10,000.

Then there's Reese and Eaton, who followed their Olympic gold medals with world titles just like Bolt.

"It was the only thing I had left on my list to do," Eaton said. "Now I have done everything there is to do in the multi-events."

The morning session featured few surprises. The Americans were in solid position for a medals sweep in the 110-meter hurdles, with defending champion Jason Richardson, Olympic gold medalist Aries Merritt, Ryan Wilson and the season's fastest man, David Oliver, all cruising through their heats.

In the opening round of the women's 100, English Gardner had the top time of 10.94 seconds and will be a favorite in the final.

American teen Mary Cain made up ground late in the race to move on in the 1,500 meters and 2008 Olympic gold medalist LaShawn Merritt posted the top time in the 400.

But this night belonged Bolt, fitting with lightning flashing overhead before his race.

"You never go into a race worried," he said. "You always got to be confident in yourself. That's what I was."

Exclusive: BlackBerry open to going private, sources say

By Nadia Damouni, Euan Rocha and Greg Roumeliotis

(Reuters) - BlackBerry Ltd is warming up to the possibility of going private, as the smartphone maker battles to revive its fortunes, several sources familiar with the situation said.

Chief Executive Thorsten Heins and the company's board is increasingly coming around to the idea that taking BlackBerry private would give them breathing room to fix its problems out of the public eye, the sources said.

"There is a change of tone on the board," one of the sources said on Thursday.

No deal is imminent, however, and BlackBerry has not launched any kind of a sale process, the sources said. Even if it tried, BlackBerry could find it hard to come up with a buyer and the funding to go private. With the company still posting losses and bleeding subscribers, private equity firms and other buyers may not want to step up.

The company's shares have fallen more than 19 percent this year. Its market value has fallen to $4.8 billion, from $84 billion at its peak in 2008.

BlackBerry, which had been pinning its hopes for a turnaround on its new line of BlackBerry 10 devices, declined to comment. The sources declined to be named because these discussions are private.

BlackBerry's openness to consider a deal marks a radical shift in thinking at the once high-flying smartphone maker. Until recently, BlackBerry, formerly known as Research in Motion and a pioneer in providing secured emails on handheld devices, had been bent on staying independent, betting its turnaround on its latest smartphones.

Last month, Heins said the company was on the right track and just needed more time to fix its problems. He said the company will unveil more devices that run on the BlackBerry 10 operating system over the next eight months.

The company has also been looking at options such as licensing its BlackBerry 10 software and other partnerships.

Waterloo, Ontario-based BlackBerry has recently had discussions with private equity firm Silver Lake Partners about potential collaboration in enterprise computing, one of the sources said.

Silver Lake is caught in a bruising $25 billion battle to take Dell Inc private. Should it succeed in the Dell buyout, one possibility could be for it to collaborate with BlackBerry in mobile computing, where the PC maker has struggled to gain traction, the source said.

The talks with Silver Lake did not involve any buyout or other transaction-related discussions, the source said.

Silver Lake declined to comment.

Pressure is only increasing on the smartphone maker. BlackBerry 10 sales have come in well below some analysts' expectations, raising questions about whether the company can quickly win back market share from Apple Inc's iPhone as well as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's Galaxy devices and other phones powered by Google Inc's Android operating system.

Some investors say the company must now look at all of its options, from a sale of the whole company to a sale of parts. Its valuable patent portfolio and high-margin services business could draw interest from technology companies.

But private equity firms have circled the company for more than two years and have tried without success so far to figure out ways to structure a deal.

Moreover, Ottawa reviews any big takeover of a Canadian company for competitive and national security reasons. Government officials have often said they want BlackBerry to succeed as a Canadian company, but concede they do not know how things will play out.

Tumblr founder to get $81M to remain at Yahoo

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Yahoo's recently completed acquisition of Internet blogging service Tumblr includes an $81 million payment to Tumblr founder David Karp as long as he remains on the job for the next four years.

The retention payment disclosed in a regulatory filing Thursday is part of the windfall that Karp and Tumblr investors realized by agreeing to sell the service for $1.1 billion in May.

Karp turned 27 last month. He started Tumblr in 2007, a few years after he dropped out of high school in New York to concentrate on computer programming.

Yahoo Inc. CEO Marissa Mayer has pledged not to make any dramatic changes at Tumblr in hopes that the acquisition won't alienate the blogging service's existing users, which includes a substantial number of teenagers and young adults.

As part of her promise "to not screw it up," Mayer is allowing Karp to run Tumblr independently in New York. Yahoo is based in Sunnyvale, Calif.

Karp is believed to own a 20 to 25 percent stake in Tumblr, which means he probably has already received a windfall, which hasn't been disclosed, from the sale to Yahoo. But he must stay at Tumblr until June 2017 under the provision disclosed Thursday to get the $81 million retention payment.

The payment will consist of $41 million in stock and $40 million in cash, according to Yahoo's filing. Another $29 million in stock options and restricted stock is being doled out to other unnamed Tumblr employees over four years.

The documents also disclosed that Yahoo paid a total of $44 million to buy six other companies during the three months ending in June. All told, Yahoo paid about $1.15 billion to buy 10 companies, including Tumblr, during the first half of the year.

Yahoo has bought several other startups since the end of June. The prices for those deals are likely to be disclosed in another regulatory filing in October and November.

GOP of Two Minds, at Least, on Immigration

On immigration, the Republican Party is trapped in two trains of thought, each speeding along the wrong track. At the tea party end, there's absolute resistance to normalizing the status of illegal immigrants. On the cheap-labor side, there's this big push to admit as many unskilled immigrants as possible.

The first view, that putting millions of illegal immigrants on the path to citizenship rewards lawbreakers, is unhelpful. It is true that they broke the law by taking jobs in the United States. It is also true that their employers broke the law in hiring them. An honest gathering of all the lawbreakers would make for an interesting roundup.

The building of this 11-million-strong population of undocumented workers had another player -- the federal government. Until Barack Obama assumed office, no president took enforcing the ban on hiring illegal workers very seriously. Also making the job difficult is the loophole letting employers accept any reasonably good-looking Social Security card as proof of right to work here. Social Security cards are often stolen, and plausible ones are easy to counterfeit.

The proposed reforms would end all that. Companies would have to send the information to a central database confirming a prospective hire's right to work here. Tougher sanctions, meanwhile, would motivate employers to follow the law.

Without passage of the immigration reforms, none of this will occur. The Swiss cheese system by which undocumented workers and their employers slip through the law will remain. If you really want to end illegal immigration, the reforms offer the only reliable route. And politically they won't happen if there's no path to citizenship.

This is pretty obvious, but in many cases, animus toward Latinos trumps even self-interest. Iowa Rep. Steve King has built quite a repertory of ethnic insults, most recently referring to border crossers' calves as "the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana."

The other Republican track wants lots and lots of legal, low-skilled workers to ensure that restaurants, hotels and other service businesses need never raise their wages. Though the hourly pay of cooks and hotel maids is actually falling, there can never be "low-enough" for the cheap-labor rump of the Republican Party.

The bill that passed the Senate provides for a new class of visas for up to 200,000 low-skilled workers. That number was reached through a delicate compromise with labor, which understandably doesn't like the idea.
But Republican Reps. Ted Poe of Texas and Raul Labrador of Idaho want more, many more, low-skilled workers.

They're proposing about 400,000 visas a year. This pleases the American Hotel and Lodging Association -- to an extent.

"Ideally, there should be no cap," association official Shawn McBurney told The Wall Street Journal. "It should be driven by the market."

By market, McBurney presumably means not the United States labor market, but the Western Hemispheric labor market. Hey, throw in the other hemisphere, too.

Labrador plays an interesting double game -- on one hand breathing fire against the path to citizenship; on the other, opening a wide highway for imported cheap labor. Perhaps there's some consistency here: Expanding the low-skilled visa program and keeping illegal immigrants vulnerable both depress wages.

Sympathy goes to that minority of Republicans who understand what it takes to get immigration reform passed and the stakes in not succeeding. They include Arizona Sen. John McCain and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham. Under assault by their party's radical wings, these lawmakers deserve an extra star for bravery.

Of course, demonizing Latinos while ignoring the economic interests of all blue-collar workers is also not great politics. A Republican Party unable to change these directions is chugging into oblivion.?

Video: Staten Island's Billoli family hosts Canada goose in Midland Beach yard

?

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- ?A mild-mannered Canada goose, apparently separated from its flock, has taken up residence inside the Billoli family?s fenced-in yard on Baden Place in Midland Beach. The goose enjoys overnight accommodations on a blanket in the garage, and cools off in a makeshift pond.

The goose, its gender yet to be determined, was discovered on Sunday, behind the shed in the back yard of Brenda Schnur, the Billolis? daughter.

?Her new dog found it and started barking at it,? explained Pete Billoli, who has lived across the street for 41 years. ?So I picked it up and carried it across the street. I kinda liked it.?

Billoli set the goose down in his own yard.

?I think he kinda likes it out here ?he?s eating grass and Cheerios.?

The goose is also taking dips in a rectangular plastic storage container that Billoli filled with water. ?Yesterday, he went right in and took a bath and everything,? he said. ?He?s walking around the yard like he lives here.?

The goose was not limping, did not appear to be physically injured, and has ruffled its feathers and extended its wings, said Billoli.

?At night, I walked him into the garage and left him there overnight,? for safety reasons, Billoli added.

?This is his four-star hotel room,? said his wife, Michele, pointing to the garage?s open door. ?And I seem to be the one cleaning up the accommodations.

?This place is like the underground railroad for animals,? she added. ?We?ve never had a paid-for animal ever. Brenda?s brought home everything you could imagine ? she?s the magnet, and we get the animals,? including turtles, cats, and a raccoon.

The Billoilis now tend a male cockatiel, Baretta, that they adopted three years ago.

On Monday morning, their goose guest ?came out of the hotel and stretched his wings. I thought he?d take off, but he didn?t,? said Mrs. Billoli.

?If it was up to my husband, I?d be raising these things. I have a feeling this thing is gonna be with me for life.?

About Canada geese? ?
While the majority of Canada geese still breed across northern Canada and Alaska, their range has expanded dramatically over the past century. ?
??
Characteristics? ?
They are currently found breeding in every state and province of North America. ?
??
Canada geese are monogamous, and often stay together for life. Pairs may return time and again to the same nest each spring. While the female is on the nest, head lowered to avoid detection, the male stands diligently nearby, keeping watch over her, and confronting any perceived threat. ?
??
Upon hatching, the goslings are led by both parents to a brooding ground, near the safety of open water. The downy yellowish goslings are able to walk, swim, and find their own food within 24 hours of hatching. They remain with the parents for up to an entire year.

Twitter hands down new rules to beat abusive talk

LONDON (AP) ? Twitter is handing down new rules to control abusive language, the company said Saturday, a move which follows a barrage of nasty, harassing, and threatening messages directed at high-profile female users of the microblogging site.

In a message posted to its website, Twitter says it is introducing a one-click button to report abuse and updating its rules to clarify that it will not tolerate abusive behavior.

The one-click button means that users will not have to navigate to Twitter's help center in order to fill out an abuse form ? a process some said was too cumbersome to deal with a mass of angry messages ? while the new rules includes a stricture against "targeted abuse," something which could include slamming a single user with messages from multiple accounts, creating an account purely to harass someone, or making threats.

The company also promised to devote more staff to weed out offending messages.

In a series of statements posted to Twitter, General Manager Tony Wang issued his own apology "to the women who have experienced abuse on Twitter and for what they have gone through."

"The abuse they've received is simply not acceptable," he said. "It's not acceptable in the real world, and it's not acceptable on Twitter. There is more we can and will be doing to protect our users against abuse. That is our commitment."

The relative anonymity of the Internet means it has long been hard to police abusive or threatening speech, but the issue recently received attention in Britain after several women went public about the sexually explicit and often luridly violent abuse they receive from online bullies, often called trolls.

Many argue that trolls are an annoyance which should just be ignored, but the catalogue of graphic threats made public by the women involved have ignited a national debate over the impunity of those spewing the hatred online.

Wang said in a tweet that the new anti-abuse policy will apply worldwide.

Motorola?s Texas-built Moto X goes on sale this month

MotoX_BlackWhen Google bought Motorola, the search giant promised that the struggling handset maker would not get preferential treatment over the many creators of other Android-based handsets. Of course, that didn?t mean that Google ultimately wouldn?t have a say in the design and building of Motorola?s smartphones. But clearly, Google walks a fine line ? it has a chance to showcase Android?s full capabilities, but doesn?t want to alienate the massive Android ecosystem in the process.

Thus it?s not surprising that the Moto X ? the first Motorola smartphone designed under Google?s ownership ? is cool, but not too cool. It?s specs are . . . OK, and it?s got just enough unique features to differentiate itself from the pack.

But is it the Android phone to end all Android phones? While I have yet to hold one in my hands, on paper I?d? say not.

During an event in New York Thursday, Motorola and Google took the wraps off the Moto X. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro dual-core processor running at 1.7 GHz, along with additional processors handling specific chores. Motorola refers to this network of processors as the X8 Mobile Computing System.

The phone also has 2 GB of RAM and comes with either 16 or 32 GB of storage. There?s no memory card slot, which is in keeping with other phones designed under Google?s aegis, such as the Nexus 4.

The display is a 4.7-inch AMOLED screen, the edges of which curve gently into the case, which is made of a composite material. The corners are curved, so it looks a lot like the 3G-era iPhones or Samsung?s Galaxy S phones from the front. Based on photos, the back curves similar the HTC One.

The screen has a 720-by-1,280-pixel resolution, with a pixel density of 316 pixels per inch. That?s less than the iPhone 5?s 326-PPI retina display, but still not bad. But, it?s surprising that Motorola didn?t up the ante by offering a 1080p display. That keeps the cost down and keeps Android partners at bay.

It also has a 10 megapixel camera that uses a cluster of 4 pixels rather than 3 in its sensor. This fourth pixel picks up light, and the company claims it can pull in more light as a result. And here?s a cool trick: to launch the camera app you just flick your wrist. To snap a pick, just touch anywhere on the screen, and holding your finger on the screen takes multiple photos.

Interestingly, the Moto X comes with a mostly stock install of Android 4.2.2, which is not the latest version of Android. At the same event last week in which Google unveiled new Nexus tablets and its Chromecast TV-streaming device, it also launched Android 4.3. Presumably, the Moto X will get an update soon, but it?s a little disappointing that even Google can?t get its own phone out the door with the latest release of Android.

You can expect the carriers offering the Moto X to load it up with their own branded crapware, but the company promises that an unlocked, Android-only version will be available direct from Google. You can buy similar Google Play versions of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 now.

As had been leaked earlier, the Moto X does indeed come with the ability to listen constantly for voice commands. It?s off by default, but when it?s on you can say ?OK Google Now? and give a command without touching the phone. In a hands-on blog post, Gizmodo reports it works so long as the commands aren?t complex:

For the most part it seems to work pretty well, though it did have trouble with longer commands, like adding a calendar entry with a time, date, and location. It would definitely be very handy while driving. You can even configure it to read texts to you, and to verbally confirm the things you tell it to write, so you really don?t have to look at it (or touch it) at all.

And unlike Google Glass, which has a similar trick but will wake up when anyone speaks the magic words, you can train the Moto X so it only responds to your voice. (I bet the finished version of Glass has this protection as well.)

The Moto X also is smart about notifications, which show up on a mostly black lock screen. They?ll display briefly, then disappear, which saves battery life.

And then there?s the vaunted ability to customize the phone physically to your liking. You can have different colored backs and other cosmetic customizations ? eventually, Motorola will even offer wooden backs.

Unfortunately, you?ll only be able to do this if you?re an AT&T customer. At Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and U.S. Cellular, you?ll be stuck with black-and-white colors. All the phones are assembled at a plant in Fort Worth.

The 16-GB version of the Moto X will sell for $199 on contract, and $249 for the 32-GB version, later this month.

Why fewer ground reports are emerging from Syria

Foreign journalists are increasingly staying out of Syria, judging the risk of kidnapping to be too great.?

By Tom A. Peter,?Correspondent / July 31, 2013

Civilians carrying bread and purchases are seen through a damaged bus at the Karaj al-Hajez crossing, a passageway separating Aleppo's Bustan al-Qasr, which is under the rebels' control and Al-Masharqa neighborhood, an area controlled by the regime, July 31.

Among the journalists I know covering Syria, almost everyone is swearing off crossing the border and going inside the country. It?s not the threat of violence that?s stopping people, but the risk of kidnapping.

Working in Syria during the war has always been dangerous. Since March 2011, the conflict has claimed the lives of at least 24 journalists and 60 citizen journalists. But for those working inside, there were ways to limit exposure to violence and there was relative comfort in knowing that you could trust the people around you. In opposition-controlled areas, Syrians wanted the outside world to hear their story and many locals went to great lengths to protect and welcome foreign reporters.

Nearly two and a half years into the war, all of that has changed. In northern Syria, the country has fallen into economic ruin and hardcore jihadist groups, many with foreign ties, have proliferated. These two factors have created an environment ripe for kidnapping. Those desperate for cash are willing to abduct people for ransom or to sell them to extremist groups willing to pay for a foreign hostage.

Last Wednesday, armed men abducted Polish journalist Marcin Suder. According to media reports, militants took Mr. Suder from a media office in Idlib. An activist at the media center intervened in an attempt to stop the kidnappers, but he was beaten and hospitalized.

Even just several months ago, the abduction of a foreign reporter under these circumstances would have been unheard of, but kidnappings like Suder?s are rapidly undoing the idea that ?safe houses? can exist in a place like Syria.

While some of the kidnappings appear to be conducted by criminal groups looking to make money, there are indications that groups with links to Al Qaeda or other extremist groups are now looking to kidnap people for potentially much more complex, political reasons. If this trend develops, it will drastically reduce the risk of foreigners surviving a kidnapping.

Already, Syrians throughout the north are suffering a rash of kidnappings. During my last visit there in late April and early May, I met one man who knew of eight people on his block who?d been kidnapped in recent months and he?d personally witnessed four of the abductions.

According to Reporters Without Borders, at least 15 foreign journalists have been kidnapped or gone missing inside Syria since the conflict began.?

That figure likely does not include a number of incidents, like one that happened to me last November. Several other reporters and I were driving through an area of Aleppo that was firmly under opposition control when a car cut us off, gunmen surrounded our car, took our driver, and brought us back to their base for several hours. Eventually, they released us, claiming to have rescued us from another kidnapping attempt. They would not tell us who they were, what rebel group they belonged to, or even if they were Syrians.

I?ve heard a number of stories about reporters who experienced brief abductions like mine, but who were released within several hours. The kidnappings now taking place appear to be of a much more serious and dangerous nature. With at least 1,200 different opposition factions, controlling the various groups, or simply understanding who is a legitimate rebel military group or a criminal group will become exceedingly difficult.

Even those who travel to northern Syria without experiencing any close calls, often leave saying they?re unwilling to return because they feel unsafe due to the massive number of foreign fighters and jihadists.

More than making it difficult, if not impossible for journalists to deliver on-the-ground reporting on one of the most brutal wars in decades, the cause of the problem is one that can only spell a dark and troubled future for Syria.?

QuakeCon Video Game Convention Underway In Dallas ? CBS ...

(credit: quakecon.org)

(credit: quakecon.org)

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) ? Some people think of it as the mother of all video game festivals and QuakeCon is taking place right now in North Texas.

The convention is being held at the Hilton Anatole hotel in Dallas.

Each year thousands of people come from all over the globe to attend, and they don?t come empty-handed. ?QuakeCon is in its 18th year and it is a giant gaming event that is taking place. It is a mixture of a giant bring-your-own-computer event, where we have over 2,800 folks that bring their PCs and spend, basically, three days non-stop playing games together,? explained Pete Hines, the vice president of Bethesda Softworks.

While the most serious of compete against each other for cash, prizes and bragging rights, Hines insists there?s room for everyone. ?You?ve got clans ? folks who like to play games together as teams ? that come to QuakeCon as a group. But then you also have folks who just come to meet other people. It?s a really great, welcoming community.?

The QuakeCon website says the event is for gamers ?from the hobbyist to the hardcore.? Attendees also have the chance to get a sneak peek at games that aren?t yet available for sale. Hines said, ?You also have a chance to come and play some of our games that we have coming out. You get to see game demos [and] hear from game developers.?

There are a number of featured speakers and presentations that will happen during the 4-day conference. Since QuakeCon is North America?s largest bring-your-own-computer LAN party Hines said, ?Lots of folks come down just to not only walk around the BYOC and see it, but again we have exhibits here so you can see the latest in PC hardware, get a chance to play games and all kinds of different stuff going on.?

Conference organizers insist that your knowledge on the latest gaming technology will not impact your ability to interact and have a good time. ?Gamers come in all different shapes, sizes and ages,? Hines said. ?My two boys are both gamers, but what they play and what I let them play is very different from what I play.?

(credit: leagueoflegends.com)

(credit: leagueoflegends.com)

In a world that often seems to be about all things Apple, Hines believes that PC games are still very relevant. ?They continue to get bigger and bigger. You see games like League of Legends and World of Tanks that have 40 or 50 million active people playing. You see a game like Skyrim that we did a few years ago that just sells millions and millions of PC copies. There are still tons of PC gamers out there.?

QuakeCon 2013 runs through August 4 and is free and open to the public.

In Egypt, Morsi's loyalists defy order to disband

CAIRO (AP) ? Thousands of Islamists loyal to Egypt's ousted president are defying a government warning to disband their marathon sit-in protest in Cairo.

The defiance by Mohammed Morsi's followers has raised the specter of a new round of violence and concerns that security forces would move in to break up the protest camps in the eastern suburb of Nasser City and in Giza.

But by early afternoon Thursday there were no significant movements by Egyptian forces against the protesters in either camp.

On Wednesday, Egypt's military-backed Cabinet issued the order that the Muslim Brotherhood sit-in be cleared.

A Brotherhood leader, Essam el-Erian, said on his official Facebook page that "the people will be victorious."

At least 130 Brotherhood supporters have died in clashes with security forces since Morsi's July 3 ouster.

Youth Cricket Championship marks milestone in sport's growth ...

photo (5)

The championship match held at South Germantown Recreational Park

Over three years ago, cricket programs for youths in Maryland were virtually nonexistent. On a bright and clear Sunday where the oval-shaped cricket ground met the horizon of Sugarloaf Mountain, the first state youth cricket championship in the country was held at South Germantown Recreational Park

For the president of the United States Youth Cricket Association, Jamie Harrison, the championship match marked another milestone for the sport. Since early 2010 when he began the USYCA and the Maryland Youth Cricket Association, the Glen Burnie resident has spearheaded the movement to cultivate and foster the non-traditional sport for children in Maryland and across the country.

?Maryland has a very large population with a passion for cricket. What?s lacking is infrastructure to allow the children of that demographic to properly learn the game, and also to introduce the game to other children outside that demographic,? said Harrison, USYCA president.

With a donation of ten cricket sets at the time, he embarked on a mission and reached out to schools in the state to implement a pilot program. Prince George?s County and Baltimore City Public school systems became the first to break ground and launch the program. With the overwhelming success it brought, this enabled the USYCA to gain momentum and receive donations of over hundreds of sets.

After expanding the program in Howard, Carroll, St. Mary?s, Kent and Queen Anne?s counties, the USYCA successfully launched cricket programs in over 400 schools in Maryland and 1,500 schools across the country.

?The state of Maryland is watching closely and fully supporting the efforts of the MYCA. It is a small step up and I?m sure other states are going to compete and come forward to introduce cricket [as well],? said Dr. Rajan Natarjan, Deputy Secretary of State of Maryland, who tossed the coin for the championship match.

Harrison has spent years laying out the foundation for cricket?s expansion, and on Sunday he saw part of his vision become a reality. He looks forward to adding more clubs for next year?s competition, while projecting to launch the pilot program in Anne Arundel, Charles and Frederick counties; among the rest of the nation.

?Were Maryland to become a national leader in cricket, it would become a target destination for domestic and international cricket tournaments, which, because there are so few first-class cricket grounds with which to compete, could prove to be quite a boon for the local economy,? said Harrison.

As the final wicket was caught, the hometown crowd of parents and kids rushed out onto the pitch to celebrate the victory Germantown Kids Cricket Club over the undefeated Cockeysville Recreation Council. For the recreation park that hosts many lacrosse and soccer tournaments, the championship match was certainly a great way to enjoy the Sunday afternoon and watch the growing sport take the right steps forward.

Denzel Washington is returning to Broadway

NEW YORK (AP) ? Denzel Washington is returning to Broadway ? but he won't be singing.

Standing with his wife, Pauletta Pearson, on the red carpet Monday at the premiere his new movie, "2 Guns," the Oscar- and Tony-winning actor said he's set to appear in a revival of Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun."

"We start previews in March," he said.

Washington then explained his motivation for returning to the stage.

"I'm trying to keep up with my wife. My wife has been doing a lot more theater than me," he said as Pearson smiled.

Washington said they were heading to North Carolina for the National Black Theatre Festival, where Pearson is starring in the award-winning "Power Play."

"I'm looking forward to one day singing," Washington said playfully to Pearson's amusement. "See, I just wanted to get something out of her. She knows I can't sing. But she can sing."

As they walked away, the 58-year-old actor continued: "I can sing. I can sing ... in the shower."

Facebook tops IPO price for first time

Facebook has risen above its $US38 initial public offering price for the first time since its debut trading day, capping a 14-month comeback fuelled by innovations in mobile advertising.

Facebook climbed as high as $US38.31, an intraday price not seen since the May 18, 2012 IPO.

The shares retreated 2.2 per cent to $US36.80 at the close of trading in New York, leaving them up 38 per cent this year. Facebook had tumbled to a low of $US17.55 in September. The stock is still trading near record levels.

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg is benefiting from surging demand for ads targeting smartphone and tablet users.

Facebook last week said ads on wireless devices generated 41 per cent of revenue in the second quarter, up from 14 per cent a year earlier, easing concerns about the company's ability to profit from mobile users that weighed on the shares after the IPO.

"It's been a fantastic run," said Ron Josey, an analyst at JMP Securities. "There may be a psychological barrier there with the IPO price, but that's not something that's fundamentally wrong."

By letting marketers show messages in the news feed on wireless devices, and shifting development efforts toward applications, Zuckerberg is delivering on his promise of making Facebook a "mobile-first" company, according to Jordan Rohan, an analyst at Stifel Nicolaus & Co.

The number of smartphone and tablet users expanded to 819 million during the second quarter, Facebook said last week.

Revenue rose 53 per cent to $US1.81 billion, topping analysts' average projection for sales of $US1.62 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Those results propelled Facebook's shares to a record 30 per cent gain on July 25.

"If you owned the stock last week and you made $US10 a share, you're probably selling and taking the profit today," said Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities. "I think people were holding out for that magic $US38."

To create another new source of advertising revenue, Facebook plans to sell TV-style commercials on its site for as much as $US2.5 million a day, two sources said this week. The world's largest social-networking site, which has 1.15 billion members, expects to start offering 15-second spots to advertisers later this year, they said.

Networking within UK businesses has increased by 15% since 2012

Networking has increased within UK companies according to a new report. The marketing technique is now used by nearly three out of five (58%) companies, a sign that companies today prefer to deepen relationships by face-to-face contact.

Compared to a similar report last year (the 2012 Channel Vision report), networking has increased by 15% over the last 12 months, a sign that in today?s digital age companies feel the need to boost their relations with their customers in a more personal way.

The new report, ?Channel Vision ? Version 2.0?, put together by design, marketing and print specialists Catalogues 4 Business (C4B) questioned over 100 organisations within the UK. The report was drawn from a diverse mix of businesses, both B2B and B2C, and a combination of industry sectors.

The report reflects that networking is second in terms of importance for delivering sales, managing director at C4B, Ian Simpson said: ?A majority of companies within the UK have found that networking has become a crucial element to their organisation. Even though social media and digital marketing has been increasing in popularity, networking has become that much more important. People prefer to talk to humans rather than computers and prefer to receive information in their hand rather than in an email. Its much more personal and appealing. A catalogue therefore becomes a great sales tool for any networker.?

The report also found that almost every company that can sell off the web could sell by catalogue too. It states that one in five businesses don?t use catalogues, who argue that it isn?t appropriate to their business. However, it highlighted that there is a need for catalogue and mail order specialists to educate the market and increase sales.

Ian Simpson said: ?The importance of offline marketing has come back into focus for companies compared to last year. With such a heavy focus on the digital era, the personal touch of networking has been lost and undervalued.?

He added: ?Now that offline marketing has flown back into the market, it is important to remember that you, as a business, need to create personal relationships with your customers and continue to build your brand. If you integrate networking with tangible materials such as catalogues, you have a strong, solid system.?

Using catalogues as a brand builder has significantly increased, a reported 39% use the technique. While looking ahead, 38% of companies aim to increase their sales by up to 20% this year, which could be done through networking and several sales platforms. Using catalogues as a sales channel is growing in importance with 17% saying that it will be crucial in the next year.

Questions surrounded their current and future business as well as their sales and marketing plans. Within the report, views of significant players were asked with 13% of those having a turnover in excess of ?20 million.

AP source: Hillary Clinton group raises $1 million

BOSTON (AP) ? She's yet to say whether she'll run, but a group working to support Hillary Rodham Clinton's prospective presidential bid raised more than $1 million in June alone.

The Ready for Hillary super PAC has accepted donations exceeding $1.25 million since beginning to raise money in earnest this spring, an official with the group confirmed Tuesday. The figure includes more than $1 million last month as the operation begins to ramp up.

The figures will be in the group's financial report on Wednesday. The official wasn't authorized to discuss by name the contents of the financial report ahead of its release and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Clinton, who resigned as secretary of state in February, has not announced whether she will seek the presidency in 2016. But the super PAC dedicated to encouraging her to run has attracted several prominent Democratic donors and campaign operatives in recent weeks.

The official says that Ready for Hillary will report roughly $1 million in the bank after expenses, with three-quarters of all expenses focused on digital advertising to help build its email list and social media capacity. The organization has already collected donations from all 50 states, according to the official.

Clinton is not formally connected to the group, which can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money. She has been making public appearances and working on a book since leaving the State Department.

The activity comes more than three years before the next presidential election, although both sides are actively working to influence Clinton's standing in the race.

Earlier in the month, Ready for Hillary announced the hiring of a Democratic firm called 270 Strategies to oversee grassroots organizing, volunteer training and recruitment. The move helped improve the legitimacy of the group among some skeptical donors. The firm, started by top aides in President Barack Obama's last election, is working on a plan to expand the operation across the country.

Republicans, too, are in the early stages of an effort to chip away at Clinton's record.

American Crossroads, the GOP group tied to Republican strategist Karl Rove, released a web video in May that suggested Clinton was less than truthful in the Benghazi case, an episode they noted happened "all under Hillary Clinton's watch." An independent review last year blamed the State Department for inadequate security but largely absolved Clinton of wrongdoing.

Separately, American Rising, a Republican super political action committee led by former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's campaign manager, created the Stop Hillary PAC and has been raising money off a potential Clinton campaign.

One email request from the co-founder of the group warned that "massive forces are aligning to begin a coronation of 'President Hillary.'"
