Pigs in southern China infected with avian flu

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Researchers report for the first time the seroprevalence of three strains of avian influenza viruses in pigs in southern China, but not the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Their research, published online ahead of print in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, has implications for efforts to protect the public health from pandemics.

Influenza A virus is responsible both for pandemics that have killed millions worldwide, and for the much less severe annual outbreaks of influenza. Because pigs can be infected with both human and avian influenza viruses, they are thought to serve as "mixing vessels" for genetic reassortment that could lead to pandemics, and pigs have been infected experimentally by all avian H1-H13 subtypes. But natural transmission of avian influenza to pigs has been documented only rarely.

In the study, from 2010-2012, Guihong Zhang and colleagues of the College of Veterinary Medicine, South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou, People's Republic of China, tested 1080 21-25 week old pigs for H3, H4, H5, and H6 subtypes of avian influenza virus, and H1 and H3 subtypes of swine influenza virus. Thirty-five percent of the serum samples were positive for H1N1, and 19.7 percent were positive for H3N2 swine flu virus, and 0.93 percent, 1.6 percent, and 1.8 percent were positive, respectively, for the H3, H4, and H6 subtypes of avian influenza A virus. However, no serum samples collected in 2001 were positive for any of these viruses, indicating that transmission into swine was recent.

Given the recent transmission of avian influenzas into swine, "We recommend strongly that the pork industry worldwide should monitor the prevalence of influenza in pigs, considering their important role in transmitting this virus to humans," says Zhang.

Previously, novel reassortant H2N3 influenza viruses were isolated from US pigs, which "were infectious and highly transmissible in swine and ferrets without prior adaptation," according to a 2009 paper in the Journal of Molecular and Genetic Medicine by Wenjun Ma et al. Those viruses resembled, but were not identical to the H2N2 human pandemic virus of 1957.

Formal publication is scheduled for the February 2013 issue of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

Mobile Photosharing, The Final Social Frontier

Andy Williams' Navajo blankets set for NYC auction

NEW YORK (AP) ? The late American crooner Andy Williams, famous for easy-listening hits such as "Moon River" and "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" from his beloved Christmas TV specials, had a passion for Navajo blankets. He assembled a museum-quality collection that's slated to be auctioned for more than $1 million next year.

The bold, colorful wool blankets decorated his home and office and also the Moon River Theater in Branson, Mo., where they hung "alongside large photographs of Mr. Williams with other musical legends of the 20th century like Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand," said David Roche, Sotheby's consultant on American Indian art.

The sale is scheduled for late May.

Williams began acquiring the blankets in the 1950s, when only a handful of people were collecting them.

The top lot is a rare Navajo Man's Wearing Blanket, woven in a "chief's first phase design" characterized by the addition of fine red stripes. Only about 50 are known to exist.

Its pre-sale estimate is $200,000 to $300,000.

"The red cloth was a very rare commodity and the effort to produce this yarn was painstaking," said Roche, Sotheby's consultant on American Indian art who knew Williams personally.

The collection numbers about 80 blankets, most woven from handspun wool.

"The early blankets are woven in limited palettes of natural brown and ivory, indigo blue and crimson red," said Roche. After 1870, there was an explosion of color because dyes from the East Coast became available through trade to the Navajo, he said.

Williams' blankets were featured at the St. Louis Art Museum in 1997-1998 in an exhibition titled "Navajo Weavings from the Collection of Andy Williams."

He died in September at age 84.

The baritone was known for his wholesome, middle-America appeal and easy-listening hits including the theme to the Oscar-winning tearjerker "Love Story." He outlasted many of the decade's rock stars and fellow crooners such as Sinatra and Perry Como. He remained on the charts into the 1970s and continued to perform into his 80s.

Iraqi President Talabani suffers a stroke

BAGHDAD Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has been hospitalized in Baghdad after suffering a stroke and is in stable condition, a spokesman for the prime minister said Tuesday.

The development injected new uncertainty into the country's political future, a year after the U.S. military left. The seriousness of the stroke is unclear.

Although his political powers are limited, Talabani, 79, is respected by many Iraqis as a rare unifying figure able to rise above the ethnic and sectarian rifts that still divide the country. Known for his joking manner and walrus-like moustache, Talabani has been actively involved in trying to mediate an ongoing crisis between Iraq's central government and the country's Kurdish minority, from which he hails.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has visited the hospital where Talabani is being treated, his spokesman, Ali al-Moussawi told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Iraqi state TV also reported that the president has had a stroke.

Rifle-toting soldiers assigned to the presidential guard were deployed around Medical City, Baghdad's largest medical complex, where Talabani is being treated. A number of senior government officials and lawmakers were seen rushing to the hospital to check on his condition, though their bodyguards were not being allowed inside.

Saadi Peira, a senior official in Talabani's Patriotic Union of Kurdistan political party, said doctors expect they will need two to three days to determine whether Talabani should continue to receive medical care inside the country or he whether he should be taken to a hospital abroad.

Talabani's office earlier said the Iraqi president had been taken to the hospital after showing signs of fatigue Monday evening, and that he was being treated for an unspecified health problem. It later said tests have shown he is suffering from a hardening of his arteries, though it described his condition as stable.

Talabani's spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.

An Iraqi Cabinet official said Talabani fainted on Monday and remains unconscious. The official agreed to speak only on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release details about the president's health.

Talabani is overweight but little else is known publicly about his health. Over the summer, he underwent knee-replacement surgery in Germany.

The Iraqi presidency is seen as a largely ceremonial post, though it does retain some powers under Iraq's constitution. The president must sign off on laws approved by parliament and has the power to block executions.

Talabani, a member of Iraq's Kurdish minority, has frequently used the post to mediate disputes within the government and among Iraq's various sects and ethnic groups.

He has recently been working to resolve a standoff between the central government and the Kurds, who have their own fighting force.

The two sides last month moved additional troops into disputed areas along the Kurds' self-rule northern region, prompting fears that fighting could break out.

Talabani last week brokered a deal that calls on both sides to eventually withdraw troops from the contested areas, though there is no timetable for how soon the drawdown might take place.

Talabani met with al-Maliki earlier Monday. They agreed that al-Maliki would invite a delegation from the Kurdish regional government to Baghdad to continue the talks, according to the prime minister's office.

Chitown Town Homes and Hot Salsa in Miami! | Real Estate Royalty

Thanks to the real Kings and Queens of Real Estate, namely my clients, the Melinda Jakovich Team was among the Top Producers for all of Prudential Rubloff for the month of November!

Along with my move to Pru Rubloff I?ve been trying to branch out with my marketing efforts, so if you go to the new Mariano?s Market at Randolph and Halsted then you'll see my little ad in the grocery carts!

Before I go any further I am excited for a friend of mine whose daughter is competing in the World Cup of Latin Dance in Miami this weekend.? Her team qualified at the Chicago championships and earned the right to compete with the very best!? In the photo she is standing and on the right.

Both Town Homes and High Rises have monthly assessments to pay for regular expenses and build up funds for larger, one-time-only types of projects.? But high rises like beautiful One Museum Park, shown above, have much larger common areas and often have employees such as 24 hour doormen and building engineers and other maintenance employees.? The net is that high rise condo assessments might be as much as three times the assessments of town house units!

I took note of this as I recently sold two town home listings, and took on a beautiful new town home listing at 408 East North Water Unit F.? This home is on the peaceful waterway called the Ogden Slip, just across from the beautifully rehabbed North Pier building.? It is an end unit, the most upgraded in the area.? Besides sumptuous interior touches created by a renowned London-based designer, it has an elevator and the land is not leased but owned.

For years the land in this area was owned by the Chicago Dock and Canal Trust, made up of the descendants of William Ogden, a New Yorker who had the amazing insight to buy up Riverfront land in the 1830?s.? He then became the first Mayor of Chicago!? (Doesn't he look just a little like a?Daley??)

His investment was protected so well that all of the original unit owners along the Ogden Slip only held leases for their land, meaning that besides assessments they also had to pay rent on the side for the land on which their homes were built.? Five years ago a land purchase option was offered and my client took advantage, making this a more complete ?single family dwelling? type of property for the discerning buyer.

The two other units we sold recently were to the South, a town home on Prairie Street in the South Loop, and to the West, at CA23 in the West Loop, shown above, which is right next to the Harpo Studios.? The West Loop is moving along well, and I have a developer looking for West Loop properties to build on!

Finally, every year around this time I put in a good word for my beloved Joffrey Ballet ? don?t miss the Nutcracker, the best Christmas show in town!

Low turnout in Egypt's vote raises questions

CAIRO (AP) ? Just under a third of voters turned out for the first stage of the referendum on a constitution meant to be a historic milestone in setting Egypt's future ? a showing critics say deepens doubts over the legitimacy of a charter that has already polarized the country.

The dismal showing also raises the question whether Egyptians have been turned off by the turmoil that has characterized the country's politics throughout the nearly two years since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak's autocratic regime.

Last Saturday's voting took place in 10 of Egypt's 27 provinces, including Cairo and the nation's second largest city Alexandria. Some 26 million voters were eligible to vote, but only 32 percent of them did. Voting in the remainder 17 provinces will take place the coming Saturday.

The turnout was the second lowest of the relentless series of five nationwide elections that Egyptians have been called to in the 22 months since Mubarak's fall in last year's popular uprising. The highest was nearly 60 percent in the election of parliament's lawmaking lower chamber. The lowest was an embarrassing 8 percent for the vote for the upper chamber, a largely toothless body that the public cares little about.

Besides the low turnout, preliminary results show that the "yes" vote carried the first round only by a slim margin of 56 percent ? hardly the resounding endorsement the Islamists were looking for to silence the increasingly vocal and united opposition that called on supporters to vote "no."

For weeks, legal experts in Egypt have said if turnout is low and the final majority in favor of the constitution is lower than 70 percent, it would raise damaging questions about how representative the document is of the nation.

But a spokesman for Islamist President Mohammed Morsi dismissed any talk of thresholds.

"The new constitution will be adopted and go into effect if the result of the referendum is 50 plus 1 percent of votes," said Yasser Ali. "This is what is in the election law and it has not been changed."

The charter has raised furious emotion in Egypt the past three weeks, sparking violence between the Islamist camp and their opponents that left at least 10 dead and 1,000 wounded. The 63-page, 236-clause document would increase the implementation of Islamic law in Egypt, raising critics' fears of sharp limitations on many civil rights.

Opponents were outraged that Morsi's Islamist allies pushed the draft to approval in hasty, dead-of-night session of the Constituent Assembly that wrote the document, despite a boycott by the assembly's liberal and Christian members. A significant sector of the public saw it as the latest of a series of moves by the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, to monopolize power.

Hundreds of thousands of people held street protests across the country demanding Morsi call off the referendum. When he refused, the opposition turned to trying to rally the public to a "no" vote.

Morsi's Islamist supporters brought out their own mass rallies, accusing the opposition of tying to thwart the democratic process. They claim they have a mandate to bring greater Islamic rule because of their victories in last winter's parliamentary elections.

Proponents have campaigned furiously for a "yes" vote ? some pushing the idea it would bring stability after months of turmoil, and many others taking a religious tack, equating support for the charter with support for Islam.

Bassem Sabry, a prominent blogger who does extensive vote analysis, said Saturday's low turnout suggested a "growing frustration with the entire political process."

"For all the polarization and amassing of supporters over the past few weeks, most of the country appears unaligned politically in any staunch manner and remains composed primarily of swing and/or disinterested voters," he wrote in a blog posted Monday.

The 17 provinces voting in the second round are largely conservative, raising expectations turnout could be somewhat higher ? though likely not enough to make up for the low first round numbers. If the second round mirrors the first it would mean around 16 million of Egypt's 51 million voters participated ? a small fraction of the country's population is 85 million.

The low participation could reflect voter fatigue. Since Mubarak's fall, Egypt has held a referendum on initial, transitional constitutional amendments and votes for the two houses of parliament and for the president, which each had run-off rounds ? and now the current referendum.

But pollster Magued Osman, head of the independent Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research, said that shouldn't have been the case in Cairo and Alexandria ? the country's two biggest cities ? since they "have been key in the debate over the constitution."

Of Cairo's 6 million registered voters, only 2.1 million voted, down from 3.6 in the presidential runoff in June, he said.

He and other experts said one factor could have been skepticism about the integrity of the vote after most judges, in a protest against Morsi, refused to oversee the referendum, as is customary in Egypt.

Along with the shortage of monitoring judges, the short time to prepare for the vote ? Morsi announced the referendum's date on Dec. 1 ? led to chaos in most polling centers.

Many of the judges who agreed to oversee the vote were loyal to the president and his Brotherhood. Activists have accused them of looking the other way while violations marred the vote.

Some accused pro-Brotherhood authorities of trying to suppress the "no" vote. In some opposition districts of Cairo and Alexandria, voters had to wait in line for up to 10 hours, with some leaving in frustration before casting their ballots.

"It is not so far-fetched to believe that stalling was responsible in part for the low turnout as part of a tactic adopted by the Islamist supporters of the constitution," Sabry told The Associated Press.

Judges in charge of polling centers, voters said, took long breaks to eat or pray. Some picked fights with voters who demanded they show documents proving they are indeed judges. Many polling centers closed at 7 p.m., ignoring the election commission's decision to extend voting until 11 p.m.

"Many of the judges closed early on the pretext that they had not received written instructions to extend voting," said Negad Borai, a prominent lawyer and rights activist. "All the problems surrounding the referendum could have been solved if Morsi seriously sought consensus on the draft, rather than ram it through."

Others stayed away in a deliberate boycott of what they called a flawed system manipulated by Islamists.

"The lines were very long. The atmosphere was unsafe," said Nayrouz Abouzid, a 32-year-old magazine publisher and head of a PR firm in Cairo. "Additionally, I felt that by voting I would be legitimizing a process that is both absurd and ridiculous."

Tarek Shalaby, a blogger and a veteran of the anti-Mubarak uprising, pointed to the Constituent Assembly that approved the draft, saying it was not representative.

"If the process of drafting the constitution was appropriate, but the outcome was bad, I would have taken part and said 'no'," he said. "I will not allow them to take me to their court to play their game."

Rocket still centerpiece as North Koreans mourn Kim

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? North Korea parlayed the success of last week's rocket launch to glorify leader Kim Jong Un and his late father on Sunday, the eve of the first anniversary of his death.

The successful firing the rocket on Wednesday ? ostensibly to place a satellite in space ? was a clear sign that Kim will continue carrying out his father Kim Jong Il's policies even if they draw sanctions and international condemnation.

The West sees the rocket as a thinly disguised way of carrying out U.N-banned tests of long-range missile technology, which it says not only threatens regional stability but is also a waste of resources when the country is struggling with a chronic food shortage.

There are concerns also that in upcoming weeks, Pyongyang will press ahead with a nuclear test, necessary in the march toward building a warhead small enough to be carried by a long-range missile.

At a somber memorial service Sunday, North Korea's top leadership eulogized Kim Jong Il and his son, who is certain to have gained national prestige and clout by going ahead with the rocket launch.

Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of North Korea's parliament, credited Kim Jong Il with building Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program, and called the satellite launch a "shining victory" and an emblem of the promise that lies ahead with his son in power.

Top military official Choe Ryong Hae, meanwhile, warned that the army was prepared to defend the country's sovereignty.

Wednesday's launch was North Korea's second attempt in eight months to fulfill Kim Jong Il's 14-year quest to put a satellite into space. International experts confirmed that the rocket succeeded in reaching space.

Criticism of the launch was swift. The United States called it a covert test of missile technology, and U.N. Security Council condemned the launch as a violation of resolutions barring Pyongyang from developing its nuclear and missile programs.

However, the launch fit neatly into the preparations to mark the first anniversary of Kim's death and the rise of his young son.

Even before his death, Kim Jong Il had laid the ground for his son to inherit a government with national policies focused on science, technology and improving the economy. The son has been characterized as forward-thinking and tech-savvy ? and the kind of man bold enough to take a gamble on a tricky rocket launch.

A launch in April, sent amid festivities to mark the centenary of the birth of North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, ended in failure shortly after liftoff.

Kim Jong Un made clear his intention to treat Wednesday's successful launch as a gift to his father.

He invited scientists in charge of the launch from a west coast launch pad to Pyongyang for the mourning rites, including a visit to the mausoleum where Kim Jong Il's body is believed to be lying in state "to report to him" on the success of the launch, according to state media.

Kim Jong Il's body has not been seen since the funeral that followed his Dec. 17, 2011, death of a heart attack. The mausoleum that houses the embalmed body of his father, Kim Il Sung, is expected to reopen this week. Both bodies will then be on display.

The mood in North Korea has been subdued this month in the run-up to the anniversary. However, news of the launch cheered people and the regime held a mass rally on Friday at the main plaza in Pyongyang.

Starting Saturday, North Koreans began streaming to a bronze statue of Kim on Mansu Hill and to Kim Il Sung Square to pay their respects, many laying white mourning flowers and bowing before his image.

On Sunday, a solemn Kim Jong Un joined the memorial service at the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium on the eve of the anniversary of Kim Jong Il's death.

Kim, whose entrances and exits usually are accompanied by a triumphant welcome song and a swell of cheers, entered the stage in silence, followed by top Workers' Party, government and Korean People's Army officials, as well as his aunt and uncle.

A military band played the militaristic "Song of Gen. Kim Jong Il" as officials and the audience bowed toward the massive portrait of Kim hung above the stage.

Tight security surrounded the gymnasium near Pyongyang's Pothong Gate. Armed soldiers in helmets posted along the street outside diverted traffic and pedestrians while more guarded every entrance to the building. The handful of foreign journalists allowed to cover the event, including The Associated Press, were searched by armed soldiers.

In his speech, Kim Yong Nam called Kim Jong Il a "peerless patriot" who strengthened the military and stood up to the United States.

The U.S. and North Korea signed a truce, not a peace treaty, at the close of the 1950-53 Korean War, and Pyongyang cites American troops in South Korea as a key reason for building its atomic weapons program.

As the hourlong ceremony came to a close, the band briefly played the mournful refrain to "The General Will Always be With Us." After the musicians put down their instruments, Kim Jong Un stood up and led a silent procession out.

Buyer Tips: Hidden Home Buying Costs - Warner Robins Real ...

For many Warner Robins first-time homebuyers, the hidden costs associated with buying a home can be quite a shock. While you may be prepared to repay your mortgage loan and the interest that is associated with it, you may not be prepared to pay the other costs that come with buying a home. Therefore, before making a purchase, it is important to learn as much as possible about the other costs that are associated with purchasing a home.

Buyer Tips: Hidden Home Buying CostsClosing Costs

Whether you are buying a house, a condo or a co-op, you can expect to pay closing costs as part of your purchase. Each lender has different fees that are included in the closing costs, so make sure to ask about these costs and what each of these fee covers.

Attorney?s Fees

Oftentimes, an attorney is included in the process of purchasing a home. While their fees are often fixed, some fees are negotiable. You should find out upfront what the attorney?s fees will be so you can compare the fees of various attorneys. In general, an attorney who tries to charge by the hour should be avoided, as it is relatively simple work.

Appraisal Costs

A?real estate appraisal will give you a clear idea of the actual value of the property. While these fees can vary quite a bit from one market to the next, they typically cost anywhere from $400 to $500 to complete. Be sure to find a reputable appraiser in order to get the most reliable report.

Inspection Fees

Before you finalize your contract to purchase the home, you will need to have the home inspected. During this process, the inspector will thoroughly check the foundation, the structure, the electrical and plumbing systems, and all other aspects of the home to determine their condition. Brian Kinkade of coloradoluxurycondos.com/ points out, ?If the inspection is done poorly, you could find yourself unexpectedly paying thousands of dollars toward repairs.? The inspection itself, however, should only cost anywhere from $300 to $400.

HOA Fees

If you choose to purchase a condo or to live in certain communities, you will need to pay homeowner association fees as part of your residency. In some cases, you may also be charged an additional maintenance charge, so be sure to learn about these fees and to budget accordingly.

Utility Charges

As a homeowner, you will find yourself responsible for paying all of your utility charges. These typically include costs such as water, gas, electricity, cable or satellite, phone and trash collection. These bills can add up to hundreds of dollars every month, so be sure to research the municipality to get a clear idea of how much you can expect to pay toward these expenses each month.

Microsoft updates Bing Desktop app for Windows XP and higher

Previously only enjoyed by Windows 7 users, Microsoft has updated its Bing Desktop app to play nice with all modern versions of Windows going all the way back to XP. The OS' latest iteration already packs a slew of Bing-powered applications, but none of them replicate the app's headlining trick: syncing desktop backgrounds with Bing's daily wallpaper. Windows 8 (and XP, Vista and server) users who adopt the 1.1 update can set the app to change their background daily, or manually set it to any background form the past nine days. News aficionados can peek at trending headlines and popular images underneath the search field, which itself can be docked at the top of the screen for easy access. Microsoft has also added French, German, Chinese and Japanese language support to the app. If this piques your interest, go ahead and download it at the source -- that is, if you haven't Google-fied your Start Screen just yet.

U.S. drops China's Taobao website from "notorious" list

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday dropped a website owned by China's largest e-commerce company, Alibaba Group, from its annual list of the world's most "notorious markets" for sales of pirated and counterfeit goods.

Taobao Marketplace, an online shopping site similar to eBay and Amazon that brings together buyers and sellers, "has been removed from the 2012 List because it has undertaken notable efforts over the past year to work with rightholders directly or through their industry associations to clean up its site," the U.S. Trade Representative's office said in the report.

The move came just before an annual high-level U.S.-China trade meeting next week in Washington.

Taobao Marketplace is China's largest consumer-oriented e-commerce platform, with estimated market share of more than 70 percent. The website has nearly 500 million registered users, with more than 800 million product listings at any given time. Most of the users are in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has called Taobao "one of the single largest online sources of counterfeits."

The Chinese Commerce Ministry strongly objected to Taobao's inclusion on the USTR's 2011 notorious markets list. A ministry spokesman said it did not appear to be based on any "conclusive evidence or detailed analysis.

Alibaba hired former USTR General Counsel James Mendenhall to help persuade USTR to remove Taobao from its list.

The Chinese company's bid to shed its "notorious" label won support from the Motion Picture Association of America, a former critic of Taobao, which praised its effort to reduce the availability of counterfeit goods on its website.

But U.S. software, clothing and shoe manufacturers urged USTR to keep Taobao on the list.

To stay off in the future, USTR urged "Taobao to further streamline procedures ... for taking down listings of counterfeit and pirated goods and to continue its efforts to work with and achieve a satisfactory outcome with U.S. rights holders and industry associations."

USTR said it also removed Chinese website Sogou from the notorious markets list, based on reports that it has made "notable efforts to work with rights holders to address the availability of infringing content on its site."

U.S. concerns about widespread piracy and counterfeiting of American goods in China are expected to be high on the agenda at next week's meeting in Washington of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade.

The 2012 notorious markets list includes Xunlei, which USTR described as a Chinese-based site that facilitates the downloading and distribution of pirated movies.

Baixe de Tudo, a website hosted in Sweden but targeted at the Brazilian market, was also put on the list along with the Chinese website Gougou.

Warez-bb, which USTR described as a hub for pre-release music, software and video games, was also included. The forum site is registered in Sweden but hosted by a Russian Internet service provider, USTR said.

The full report can be found on USTR's website at: http://www.ustr.gov/sites/default/files/121312%20Notorious%20Markets%20List.pdf

Cheese: Not as newfangled as we thought

Researchers have linked ancient milk residue (thousands of years-old) to early forms of cheese-making. The scientists say this research provides new insights into the human diet and food production technologies.?

Milk production and dairy processing allowed early farmers to produce food without slaughtering precious livestock, and making cheese?turned milk into a less perishable food that was more digestible for a population who at the time would have been intolerant to the lactose contained in milk.

Researchers from the?University of Bristol in Britain, with colleagues in the?United States?and?Poland, analyzed fatty acids embedded in prehistoric pottery from the Polish region of Kuyavia, and found they had been used to separate milk into fat-rich curds for?cheese and lactose-containing whey.

"The presence of milk residues in sieves ... constitutes the earliest direct evidence for?cheese-making," said M?lanie Salque from?Bristol, one of the authors of the research, which was published in?the journal Nature.

Peter Bogucki, another researcher involved in the work, said: "Making cheese?allowed them to reduce the lactose content of milk, and we know that, at that time, most of the humans were not tolerant to lactose."

Milk residues have been found at ancient sites up to 8,000 years old in?Turkey?and?Libya, but there was no evidence that the milk had been processed into cheese.

Until now, the earliest evidence of?cheese-making came from depictions of milk processing in murals several thousand years younger than the pottery fragments.

The researchers believe other vessels found in the same region were used for other specific purposes. Jars lined with beeswax were probably for storing water, and pottery containing the remnants of carcass fats was probably used for cooking meat.

"It is truly remarkable, the depth of insights into ancient human diet and?food processing technologies?these ancient fats preserved in archaeological ceramics are now providing us with," said?Richard Evershed, who heads the?Bristol?team.

Danielle LaPorte: Why I Gave Up Chasing Goals

If you're miserable when you hit your target, then it's not really a victory. Personally, if I have to dumb down, tone it down, or amp it up to be more appealing to more people, then I'm not that interested.

I want to be thrilled. I want love to sit at the center of my business plan, at the center of my life. And that's what keeps me, well, centered. And that's the goal.

I want to feel good more than I want to check accomplishments off my list.

I want to feel good more than I want to please other people.

I want to feel good more than I need to look good.

All the goal-chasing I used to do, partly out of wanting to feel like a cool entrepreneur, was pecking away at my peace of mind and contributing to my already deeply-entrenched complex of never being enough. Big enough, loving enough, wealthy enough, strategic enough, evolved enough, popular enough.

Enough.

Intentions and goals are tools for liberation. But when we use goal-chasing like a hammer, it can beat up on our self-esteem, relationships, and creativity.

The foundation of a good relationship with intentions and goals is keeping in mind that the primary aim of setting and working toward them is to feel the way you want to feel.

The Desire Map launched last week. It will turn your ambitions inside out.

Nexus 4 factory images, binaries disappear from Google site

Android Central

In slightly puzzling news, Google appears to have pulled the Nexus 4 Android 4.2.x system images from its online repository of factory images. These files allow devices to be restored to their original state, so if something goes wrong when flashing a ROM or otherwise tinkering with your phone, there's an easy way back to stock.

Factory images for other Android 4.2 devices, such as the Nexus 10, Nexus 7, Nexus 7 3G and Galaxy Nexus remain on Google's site, so it'd appear whatever caused them to be withdrawn is specific to the Nexus 4.

Our best guess is that this might relate to the LTE situation on the Nexus 4. By changing a hidden setting, it's possible to use the N4 on LTE networks running on Band 4 (AWS), though this is not officially documented or approved by regulators. And that last part may be key -- if Google is preparing to patch this hidden LTE option out of the Nexus 4 -- as it'd be required to do to avoid falling foul of bodies like the FCC -- then clearing out earlier factory images might simply be a precaution. It's possible Google's looking to keep regulators happy by making it harder to find the earlier radio code that enabled this unlicensed LTE functionality. That's just speculation on our part, however, there may be a much more innocuous explanation.

In any case, we'll keep you posted on any further developments.

Update: Should have checked this the first time, but binaries are gone as well. They were there before, right?

Deployed Soldier Featured On CBS4 Returns Home To Family ...

Spc. Juan Santiago is welcomed home by his daughter Hope (credit: CBS)

Spc. Juan Santiago is welcomed home by his daughter Hope (credit: CBS)

FORT CARSON, Colo. (CBS4) ? It was almost one year ago when one Fort Carson soldier deployed to Afghanistan for the first time. Now Spc. Juan Santiago has just returned home to his country, his wife and his daughter.

Santiago left Fort Carson a private first class and he returned a specialist. He?s a father, a husband, and a soldier who, like so many others, has given up a year of ?firsts.?

?I?m going to miss her first steps. I?m going to miss her first words. I?m going to miss just about everything that a baby does for the first year,? Santiago said before he deployed last year.

A year ago Pvt. Santiago couldn?t think beyond leaving home and perhaps being killed.

?It?s not so much about dying, it?s about time away, how different things are going to be when you get back; what?s changed, what hasn?t changed,? he said.

Santiago is CBS4?s Gloria Neal?s nephew. She was there to greet him when he arrived home and asked him how it felt.

?It?s emotional. I don?t know. I?m just happy to be home ? definitely happy to be home,? he replied.

Clearly visible are the physical changes Santiago underwent on his time away. He has a slimmed-down face and bulked up body.

Before he left, his daughter Hope was a daddy?s girl.

?I walk into the room it?s not a big deal. He walks into the room and she?s just like big eyes; always staring at him. She knows when he?s home,? Santiago?s wife Helen said before he deployed.

RELATED: Soldier Sacrifices: Paying The Price While Serving

Now Hope is a toddler who?s looking like, ?Who is this man called Daddy??

?She?s gotten big,? Santiago said.

?She?s like, ?Who is this man?? ? Helen said.

As for Helen?s worries ? like most military wives ? it?s the fear of not knowing the future.

?It?s just like the unknown; like you don?t know if it?s going to be the last time you hug him; or if it?s going to be the last time you go to sleep together,? Helen said before he deployed. ?You don?t know if it?s the last time he sees Hope. You just don?t know.?

The family is back together again just in time for the holidays.

?I?m okay. I?m home now and that?s all that matters,? Santiago said.

Beyond toys: A gift guide for children - My Home Tableau

I love a good toy. Particularly one that invites open ended play. Toys can enhance and open up an child?s imagination in beautiful ways. And what child doesn?t want to open at least a few toys on Christmas day? You can be sure our kids are getting some toys, and this Mama is thrilled to get them as well.

Maybe, though, you would like to give something other than a toy. Or maybe you would like to give something in addition to a toy. Here are some great non-toy gift ideas for children. Many of them can be enjoyed by the whole family, so you could make it a family gift.

1. Ranger Rick (or Ranger Rick Jr.) Subscription

Our children were given a subscription to Ranger Rick Jr. (formerly Big Backyard) from one of Brian?s aunts. We are in our second year of the subscription and my kids thoroughly enjoy it. Each issue features a different wild life animal. We have learned so much about different animals that I wouldn?t normally even think to talk about. It has been both educational and fun.

And what kid doesn?t like getting mail? Each time the issue comes we love sitting down and reading the stories, looking at the beautiful pictures, and learning something new. We also enjoy doing some of the various activities and ideas included in the issue. We have the Jr. version, but they older kid version gets equal ratings.

Give a gift of learning about nature and wildlife. Not only will they enjoy it for any entire year, each time the issue comes they will think of you.

2. Kiwi Crates Subscription

Simply brilliant, I tell you. This is a perfect gift for the child that loves to craft?and for a mom that is too busy to always pull together the craft. By the time you find the idea, pin it, remember to get the supplies, only to realize you used the supplies on another craft before you ever did the original idea, crafting can take up a lot of time for a mom.

Kiwi Crates offers a monthly subscription, or a 3-month and 6- month option. The box comes to your door with several themed crafts, and all the supplies you will need for it. All crafts are intended for children ages 3-7 and will delight a child and relieve a mom.

They also have some stocking stuffer crafts that look adorable. What little boy wouldn?t love to be able to find all the materials to make his own cape, or a little girl to make some butterfly wings in their stocking?

3. Craft supplies or kits

Keeping with the craft theme, Artterro has craft kits for the older elementary child. Most of these kits are for children age 7 and up.? There are a host of options. From bookmaking, felt, bead, wire, bead, and paint, you can find a kit with all the supplies and directions for a craft lover.

My kids are still too young for these, but I know I have some nieces and nephews that would love some of these. Check out their catalog via their website, or order through Amazon.

4. Audio Stories

Ever since my oldest stopped taking a nap every day we have learned to love a good audio story. He often listens to these while he rests and plays quietly during rest time. You can buy quality audio stories or get them from your library. We have found that the quality of library audio books varies quite a bit.

Entire audio sets of books like The Chronicles of Narnia , or another story you know the child will love make a great gift.

Sparkle Stories has a subscription option for weekly stories. There are several different stories you can subscribe to for various ages. Each story has 52 segments, one story per week for a year.

We have never gotten a subscription, but they frequently offer free stories (obviously you don?t get the continuation) and we have really enjoyed those.

This is a husband and wife team who were formerly Waldorf educators. All the stories are original, and you will be supporting a family owned business.

Greathall also has a host of story options by Jim Weiss (who is the reader for the popular audio version of Story of the World books). You can find these stories divided by age (beginning at age 3), or by time period which would be great if you are studying, or your child has as particular interest, in a specific era of history.

I have only heard parts of Story of the World, so I can?t vouch for everything there, but there are some great options.

This is a great way to introduce children to stories, culture, history, and classic literature all at once. These are available on CD or by download.

5. Maestro Classics

These are technically audio stories, but they get in some classical music as well, so I?ll put them separately. Plus, we just love these.

You know I love classical music, and I love to have my kids listening and enjoying it as well. These CDs are fabulous.

Stephen Simon is a classical musician who was the Music Director of the Washington Chamber Orchestra at the Kennedy Center for 25 years. He founded Maestro Classics as a way to combine stories and classical music in hopes of encouraging a love of music in children.

Well, we love them. Hands down, Stefan will tell you that Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel and Peter and the Wolf are his all time favorite. These are always asked for as soon as we get in the car, and they frequently get listened to while the kids are playing as well.

Each CD features the track with the musical story. There are also additional tracks where they explain what instruments they used to make different sounds (like the trombones for the airplanes), and various other things. You can listen to a sample on their site.

You can buy these as CD?s or MP3 downloads off their site, or via Amazon.

Those are my ideas. Now I?d love to hear some of your ideas!

What are some great non-toy gifts for kids?

(AP) ? More than nine months after the NFL first disclosed its bounty investigation of the New Orleans Saints, four players will finally get a ruling on whether their initial suspensions are upheld, reduced or thrown out.

Former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who was appointed to handle a second round of player appeals to the league, has informed all parties he planned to rule by Tuesday afternoon. His decision could affect whether two current Saints ? linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith ? get to play out the season.

If the sanctioned players find Tagliabue's decision palatable, that could finally bring the bounty saga to an end. If not, it will be up to a federal judge to either disqualify Tagliabue or let his ruling stand.

Even if Tagliabue maintains the suspensions, any punishment will delayed a week, allowing Vilma and Smith to at least play this Sunday at home against Tampa Bay, a person familiar with the decision said.

The delay is aimed at giving U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan in New Orleans time to review Tagliabue's ruling and decide if she still believes she must take the unusual step of getting involved in a collectively bargained process in order to protect the players' rights, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because no ruling had been announced.

If Vilma, Smith, Cleveland linebacker Scott Fujita and free agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove get the ruling they seek, it would discredit an NFL probe ? overseen by Commissioner Roger Goodell ? that covered three seasons and gathered about 50,000 pages of documents.

The probe concluded that Vilma and Smith were ring-leaders of a cash-for-hits program that rewarded injurious tackles labeled as "cart-offs" and "knockouts."

The NFL also concluded that Hargrove lied to NFL investigators to help cover up the program.

None of the players has served a game of their suspensions yet and have been allowed to play while appeals are pending, though Fujita is on injured reserve and Hargrove is not with a team. Shortly before the regular season, the initial suspensions were vacated by an appeal panel created by the league's collective bargaining agreement. Goodell then reissued them with some modifications. Meanwhile, the players have challenged the NFL's handling of the entire process in federal court.

Vilma received a full-season suspension, while Smith was docked four games. Hargrove initially received an eight-game suspension that was later trimmed to seven games, but for practical purposes, was reduced to two games because he was given credit for five games he missed as a free agent after being cut by Green Bay before the regular-season opener. Fujita had his initial suspension reduced from three games to one, with the league saying that he failed in his duty as a defensive leader in 2009 to discourage the bounty program run by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

Goodell also suspended Williams indefinitely, while banning Saints head coach Sean Payton for a full season.

Tagliabue's ruling comes after a new round of hearings that for the first time allowed Vilma's attorneys and the NFL Players Association, which represents the other three players, to cross-examine key NFL witnesses in the probe. Those witnesses included Williams and former Saints assistant Mike Cerullo, who was fired after the 2009 season and whose email to the league, accusing the Saints of being "a dirty organization," jump-started the probe.

Also for the first time, the NFL allowed players' attorneys to review all of the documents the NFL had collected, including some in which people stated that the players never did what they were accused of, the person who spoke with AP said.
