Making A Special Gift : Scrapbooking 101

This article looks at the general scrapbooking topics of gifting scrapbooks. Scrapbooks make great gifts for those people who have everything. They are very personal and will be treasured for a very long time.

It is easy to make a scrapbook as a gift. The first thing to determine is the topic. If the gift is for an anniversary or a birthday that has special significance, the topic can be a celebration of that event or life events that lead up to it. If the person has had something special happen to them like a graduation or it is their child or grand child?s first birthday you may consider doing the scrapbook about the grandchild and not about the person who is receiving the gift.

An important element of this special book is the collection of photos commemorating the topic. You may have to be sneaky in order to obtain them. Contact friends and family members that know how to keep a secret and get them collecting photos for you too. You will want to scan photos and return them intact. Digital and scanned photos can then be printed at a photo center or on your home printer.

You will then need the materials to make the book. There are many options when it comes to the book itself. You can go to a local craft supply store and buy a book specifically made for the purpose or you might want to get a photo album instead and adapt it to your purpose. You may even reuse an old picture book of your own if you are more inclined to be environmentally friendly. Do not feel you have to be restricted here. Just about any shape or size will do as long as you can nicely arrange the story inside.

All the materials necessary can be found at the craft shop but be sure to look around at home for treasures. You are going to want some card stock that you can cut shapes from although wrapping paper, magazine paper, newspaper, and other scraps will also do the trick.

Some people like to use special scrapbooking cutters but this is not necessary. You can use regular scissors as well as specially edged scissors if you wish. For cutting more difficult patterns, use a ruler and an exact-o knife. Make sure you are careful not to cut yourself.

You want the scrapbook to tell a story so it is a good idea to plan out the book before permanently gluing anything in. You will likely find that certain elements fit better in some places and not others and you may want to make changes along the way. To keep things from moving around while you do this, artists tape will stick things temporarily.

This is a hobby that has gained popularity over the years and you might find that after you have completed one, you are hooked and will quickly find yourself doing another. Not only is it relaxing for the hobbyist but they make great gifts that have special meaning. There is nothing that says you care than something made from the heart.
